I’m looking to buy an electric lawnmower. Have done a bit of research and notice the Bosch has good reviews. Has anyone got an electric mower of any make that they could comment on, pros and cons. Thank you in advance.

We've got a Stihl and its great. Light weight, easily maneuverable and battery powered, so no cord issues. Only operates when lever is squeezed to handle so good safety cutout. We bought it with a 180 battery and have since got a 300 as we have several battery other powered Stihl products now.My only issue is when the grass is wet and long the cut turns to pesto consistency and I have to grab it out by hand. Lesson don't leave too long between cuts.

mains powered or battery?
mains will perform better and for longer than the battery models. especially the measly 36v ones. i think the good ones now are 56v and up.

depends on what sort of lawn you have.

Isn't electric one with a cord, plugged into a power outlet & battery just that . rechargeable battery?

not sure what you mean.

generally battery powered ones are lower powered than mains powered.
a quick look at boshes site and they don't even say what power the battery models are. probably because they don't want people to see how gutless they are.

with battery powered ones, the batteries have limits on how much power they can output (safely). its easier to increase the voltage to get more power. hence why you get 56 volt ones.

Electric ok dont run over cord
Battery - keep battery charged and no good on long grass and only last 20mins

Thank you very much your comments are very much appreciated. had to smile as hubby much keener on a Stihl, like you we have several of their products and appreciate their reliability. Time to think Stihl, as they do do, in general, what they say they will.

tweake - definitely battery, but reading comments realise a larger than 36v is preferable. Query is for family member, quarter acre flat section, how much mowing could you expect from one battery? Perhaps 2 are needed? Thank you for your reply.

Samantha hi, looking at a battery model, rechargeable. Not a corded one. Not sure how long one charge would run for, depends on grass length I would imagine and density. Sounds as if they work better when grass is dry. Thinking a Stihl is the answer.

Thanks kevymtnz, if 20 mins is what you could expect from one charge it sounds as if 2 batteries might be good to have. We’re very grateful for your comments, thank you.

how long does it take them to do the lawn with a petrol mower?
it depends on how much grass area there is and type of grass.

eg it takes me about an hour to do my section with petrol mower. at 20 mins per battery your going to need a stack of them. i would also expect a battery mower to be slower than a petrol because it cuts grass slower.

most electric mowers are made for really really small lawns.

The battery in mine lasts for months and only goes flat when it hasn't been used for a long time---winter.

A bit to think about here. Thank you for taking the time, we’re very grateful for your reply.

This video is UK based and a couple of years old but some interesting info on what is a developing product: https://youtu.be/p8n6HLjD0XU

We’ve just watched this clip and several after it. This information has been very helpful. If only Stihl would have a half price sale soon 😆. Stihl and Bosch emerging as preferred, those that have them seem pleased with their purchase. Thank you for your reply.

If you have Stihl gear already, then that's the way to go, just get a few bigger batteries.

have a look at the Ego brand, we got ours at Mitre 10.

If it’s a 1/4 acre section, stick with petrol. Battery are for very small sections

small woods, lovelurking and golf diver, thank you very much for your replies. This morning have to admit we’re feeling very much b’twixt and b’tween. After deciding to go electric are thinking, no, perhaps stay with petrol. The electric looked ideal. no cans of petrol, light and easy to start, but can see the batteries and size of area to be mowed present their own problems. Thank you everyone who has taken the time to offer help.

You are welcome!

We have other Ego equipment (and love it) and have a spare battery.
I think by the time the battery needs changed and or charged its time for a break from the job anyway. 😉

Haha you’ve got a good point!

I’m loving my EGO one. Battery lasts around 45 minutes, and it takes me about 40 to finish the lawns, so I haven’t ever run out of charge.

If its a small section then definately consider a push mower . a lot of advantages .
