Tomatoes and birds

lynne06, Jan 18, 11:39pm
I have strung up some cd's on the frame by the tomatoes, works a treat, the birds don't like the shine the cd's make as they blow in the breeze. So far so good!

Should they be classic, pop,r &r or country. I don't want to waste the wrong one on them.

A few of the ex's favourites! LOL!

Grow black and yellow Tomatos the birds seem to leave those alone at the expense of the red ones.

The birds here eat the tomatoes while still green. I have got dishes of water around too! I now pick the tomatoes green and ripen them on the bench. The problem is I have grown different varieties and now don't know which is which! Darn! (Want to save seeds too and won't know names of them either!)

I used netting o mine this year very successfully. I grow them up against a wooden retaining wall and haven't had any problems with wind burn or birds this season at all.

Apart from enclosing the plants with netting, how can i stop birds from eating them when they look like ripenning. Maybe a cat parked beside the plants. ?

Hi newt, I think netting is the only way. I've had to make a screen door for my glasshouse even, as the blackbird that gives me so much pleasure to watch & listen to . the bu**er got my first ripe tomato! They will find a way, found one in my secure berry cage, pigging out on raspberries recently. The chooks had scratched around the outside bottom board rail & the bird got under.
Other than that, could you pick them under ripe & ripen on a windowsill . not the same,I know.
All the best for 2015 btw.

Put water out for the birds. they are doing it for the fluid in the fruit and not for the fruit itself. Put water down and they will stop pecking.

Bigger tomatoes. I lost lots of cherry size fruit last year till I netted, then I caught lots of blackbirds! Pansy was disgusted when I let them go (after a stern lecture on perils of thievery) she was convinced they should be handed over for punishment. But then, she doesn't like tomatoes.

Was just going to start a thread on this too.
we have put netting over ours that are in big containers, and yesterday hubby caught on, he held onto it for few minutes and told it , it would be dead meat if it got under the netting again. I go to hang out the washing today and thought I didnt have many pegs. Hubby used them to peg the net. and blow me down as I drove up the drive this arvo, here is a blackbird just staring at the net. We have about 6 bowls of water around so they cant be thirsty as we need to add more water every day.we are sure we never had this problem last year. we also do feed them out the front of house. Tomatoes are at the back. oh well, lifes trials I guess

Nooo, my strawberries, then my raspberries, and now my tomatoes?! Will there be anything left for me?

herc18, Jan 7, 12:06pm
Get a cat, I don't net anything they leave the raspberries, blackberries and tomatoes alone here but I do feed them from time to time in summer and there is water out.

yeah thanks Sam.It's a pain when you nurture them for 2 months expecting to have the first ripe one, only to be beaten by a blackbird. What realy p,,sed me off was when my neighbour was away he asked me to mind his which were still very green and still forming. I thought i would be clever and bought two ripe toms still on the truss and cleverly taped them to his plant so it looked like i had rippened them overnight. But i wasn't clever enough, the birds beat him to it and ate them before he got the chance to see them.

We have three cats, give them water and feed on the lawn but nope the birds love the tomatoes. I put net over. You can buy a roll at the supermarket and it lasts ages. Can reuse too.

#8, we did this too, to a friend who was bragging his were ripe and ours looked like being ripe in a years time. lol

Ha ha ha , I couldn't believe it when i saw the birds helping themselves. They have eyes like hawkes, but not quite as big.
