Doors between toilet and kitchen

scotnz, Feb 16, 11:32am
Moving to new house and want to put extra toilet in laundry. There is a passage to back door between laundry and kitchen. Door on laundry but not on Kitchen. You used to have to have 2 doors between toilet and kitchen. Does that rule still apply !
We are in Auckland. Tried looking on council site but couldn't find where to look.
Thanks

NZ Building Code G1 "3.2.1 In household units, at least one door
shall be provided between a soil fixture and a
kitchen or a place for food storage."

Yes, it used to be 2 but it isn't any more.

Thank you, that is great means much cheaper option then moving door to another wall. Thanks again

Poster #2 missed a bit from G1. - 3.3 Basins adds that if there is only one door between kitchen and a sanitry fixture then there must be a hand basinprovided in the WC space. There are also space size requirements in the same acceptable solution that you should check that you can comply with as well.
You realise you should have a Building Consent for this work!

Thanks tezw1,
Haven't moved in yet. Still planning, will talk to builder re consent. Since it is in laundry, will the laundry tub not do for hand washing! Think it will be big enough and has window.

Didn't even consider the tub, but yes that would be ok. The regulations only exclude the use of a kitchen sink as a hand washing basin. Assume that being a laundry it has an opening window. You will need a space 800mm min wide and 400mm min of leg room in front of the bowl, as the front is normally around 750mm from the wall this equates to 1150mm min length, more if the door opens in and faces the toilet.
