I am getting a lawnmower I know roughly what I want, Masport Briggs and Stratton engine, allow body, 4 stroke, I just need to know engine size I have pretty big lawns ( about and and a half to mow) so is 4.5hp and 5hp pretty big!

pettal, Jan 1, 3:17am

OP, See if you can find someone who re-builds second hand mowers with new engines etc, You can then get more for your money. I guess a wider bodied mower will likely save time, too. Self driving can also help.

cantabman1, Jan 1, 7:33pm
I think masport still make a 20" cut mower, and unless your cutting very high or thick grass, 4.5 HP is heaps of grunt. When you start talking about ride-on's etc the price really goes up.

$399 mower from bunnings is fine. they have victa;s. Alloy bodie mowers today are very thin, if you have stones they will go thru it.Nothing wrong with a todays steel chassis .they all have a hole for a garden hose so you can wash it after you use it.B&S engine with a 4.0or 5.0 sticker on top is just a model number not its CC rating. its probley still a 3.5cc A 5Hp lawnmower will cost over $1000.Hey and only differance between a 3.5Hp and a 4Hp is the size of the carb.Lawnmower Engines can not be reco'd. they can only be patched up, as the engine has no bearings or bearing shells , the crank runs on the alloy casings.

Dont buy a Masport. The rear flap is plastic, it will not last 2 years.

had a 5hp honda mower it was a good mower gave it to my son proberly 10 years old now just tho odd spark plug and blades they about $1000 to buy now i think.

If you have pretty big lawns you might want to go all out and buy a Honda 21" self propelled,I used to contract for 8 years I changed over to Honda about 7 1/2 years ago,it was the best thing I ever did.

tamsim, Jan 2, 1:00am

It depends on what you want to achieve. Are you mulching or catching, etc!Warehouse brand mowers can be hard to service. Probably best to talk to your local mower shop and get some idea on the differences

dagon1, Jan 13, 12:40am
yeah i will be catching.yeah i tried to do the basic service spark plug oil change fuel filter and air filter .but the thing just started stuffing out and the shop i took it to didnt want to know it lol.i will go into town and just ask around a few shops see what they say cheers for help .

amasser, Jan 13, 1:27am
Lawnmaster has done 23 years for me, so far.

golfdiver, Jan 13, 7:26am
Victa razor is a very good mower imo. Make sure you get a 4 stroke unless cutting very steep lawns.

stevo2, Jan 13, 8:06am
You buy a mower from the lawnmower shop, not a department store.

rich1969, Jan 13, 8:25am
Get a Honda

alistacamel, Jan 13, 10:35am
They don't make razors any more.Mustang is the replacement

alistacamel, Jan 13, 10:36am

Four strokes stall too easily cutting long grass, but two strokes use heaps more fuel and then you have to get measuring containers and do a good job mixing fuel and oil. But you never have to tip a fourstroke over and change the oil if you have a two stroke. I got a Rover alloy body with a Suzuki two stroke Twenty Three yearsago and its still going great.Tailgate a bit rusty as the powder couting fell off years ago and I got the commercial steel catcher screen as the plastic one smashed. A mate blew his Rover Suzuki by washing his air filter in petrol and the foam rotted because of the aromatic in the new unleaded fuel and bits of fiter and mower dust went through the motor. Clean the filter in clear gas, white spirit shellite or stoddard solvent.
