Advise needed to by a new Lawnmower

rabbitsvilletau, Nov 14, 4:28am
We have never owned our own lawnmower we have always paid to have it mowed we now want to do our own lawn, we have 660sq property which is sloping in some areas.
What do people think is the best lawnmower on the market?.
Any advise would be helpful.

Ask the people that come and mow your grass now.

They will be more than familiar with the situation.

Asking mower guy is a great idea ta.

My lawn master just about to die after forty years. I would say he deserves to go lawn master heaven.

Make sure a lawnmower has an alloy deck and ball - bearing wheels with a well known brand of motor and you should be OK

Honda motor
B&S just seem to have less power for the size.

Flymo might be great for a slopping lawn but the build quality is absolutely crap. The drive belt keeps breaking even with light use. My flymo drive belt was repaired during warranty and then it broke again not too long after warranty. At that it was deemed uneconomical to repair.

Would not recommend for large lawn area. Like the concept and ease of use but the build quality is simply crap.

When I lived in a town property, I had a battery operated number, to mow 50 sq metres of lawn & it was OK but useless when I moved .
Now that I have nearly an acre of lawn (apart from the ride on) I have a masport & I like it, because it starts after the second pull on the cord. At my bach, I have a really really old masport & it always starts after a few pumps on the fuel thingy & a couple of pulls on the starter cord. Starting, the damned mower is a biggie for me, and the masport motors have delivered in my experience.

If you only want to buy a lawnmower once, buy one with an alloy body. Don't bother with steel bodies- they'll rust through before you can say boo. Might cost a bit more, but well worth it. Go for a reputable brand too.

Masport used to make the best mowers available , followed by Lawnmaster. The Masport were made here, and have a one piece alluminum body and a hardened Blade. Not the cheapest available, but dam reliable with 'The Briggs n Stratton Motor, over 100 million world wide'. The Chinese now copy all this with mixed success.

They're so cheap these days I wouldn't make an investment out of it. I spent a little more than the very cheapest to get the Briggs & Stratton motor with the push button priming pump for easy starting.

Thanks everyone for the great advise, it is so helpful we haven't rushed, will have another took around this weekend.

you get what you pay for, don't buy into brand vs brand to much - as suggested an aluminum body will tolerate more abuse. most of the cheaper mowers use B&S motor which are ok - but you cant complain to much for $2-400

We have ended up buying a Ryobi ae109v petrol 4 storke, secondhand it hasn't had much use we wanted one that mulched, so here's hoping a good choice.
Time will tell.
