What about a plastic jar, the hole for the wires a bit of silicone sealer around them, and the lid should seal out any water.

Replace the 9v with a small solar panel and charge controller charging a 12v battery. Power for ever.

Batteries are very cheap, and there should be no current drain unless a snail is on the wires.

I thought about it. Nice idea. but decided against it because:
1) too many things to do and so little time!
2) I don't mind getting technical if the situation demands it, but if not then I'd really rather keep it very simple a.k.a. cheap, simple and reliable.
3) one 9v battery on each of the vege beds lasts one whole spring-summer season. I'm good with that.

One battery would do all of the beds. No power is being used except for one second for each snail.
