I was given lovely potted Christmas lily last year. After flowering I cut back once the leaves/stalk had dried up. Kept minimally watered over winter, in bright but not direct sunlight. It duly sprouted again some months ago, but is really long and leggy and no sign of flowers for this Christmas What have I done wrong? I didn't re-pot or anything, so maybe it needed fresh potting mix? The growth is lovely and green, no yellow bits, but it's just spindly and thin, not the upright spikes as per when I got it and it was flowering.

dont think you did anything wrong I won a auction with lovely big flower lilies some still in the pots and some i put in the garden
ones in pot have got flower heads but very small so maybe put in garden or bigger pot for next season like i will

Long and leggy? Was it kept inside, probably not the best thing for it. If you want to grow it in a pot then it needs repotting, as I imagine it was sold in a very small pot and needs a larger one, it also needs fresh pot mix. If it were mine I would put it in the garden as lillies are not indoor plants long term. Only while flowering. Leave it out doors and bring inside when almost flowering.

Best to let the stalks totally die down and just tie up afterwards to tidy up rather than cut off. The bulb gets its nutrients from this stalk for next year's growth. Bulbs need feeding too, if you want he to flower every year.

We had Christmas lillies in the garden at our last house. We just left them in ground (added compost yearly) and they grew every year and the display was amazing.

OK it seems the keeping inside was the problem. I think I interpreted them being OK in pots as being OK inside - not quite the same thing. I'll find a spot I can transplant them to in the garden somewhere. Do you reckon I should do that now, or wait till the greenery dies down again?

no wait until it cools down as they like cold

Probably the mix in the original pot had only enough fertiliser in it to support the flowering last year and that mix is now 'spent'.

Either repot with fresh good quality potting mix or plant out in a suitable garden location once this year's growth dies down.

Best to plant it in the garden in a sunny spot.

sad story about Christmas lillies.
I had hundreds, and used to cut them to sell on the roadside just before Christmas.
Along comes a new man, well, an old man really, in two senses. He was oldish, and was an ex I was getting back with.

Anyway, to continue the story, We moved into a property with a large veg garden, ideal for my lillies thought I, so I planted them on the edge, but, but MR who shall remain nameless, decided to rotary hoe that area, and although I said there were lillies there, he chose not to listen, (although said he didn't hear) so my hundreds of Christmas lillies were no more, and I lost a lucrative source of Christmas income.

just because I know you're dying to know, we're still together, 23 years now, add that to the original 24 years, with a 12 year gap. Coming up to what would have been a golden wedding, if we hadn't gone our separate ways, to his sorrow as it happens, as he married a woman who took him to the cleaners.
So now you know ALL about me.
well, nearly

Rotary hoe and not listening, oh dear.
