Base for wall tiles

I want to tile a small area of the walls in my kitchen, which are made of hardboard. As I understand it, hardboard is not suitable for tiling over. Can I fix cement board directly over the hardboard and then lay the tiles onto the cement board?

For a small area I would just use an adhesive that was compatible with the hardboard.

its not the sticking thats the problem, its the flexability in the hardboard thats the problem, grout will crack and fall out, either cut hardboard out and put hardies or gib on first, or nail/glue hardies straight to the hardboard

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. :)

Is it likely though, that any pressure making the wall flex will ever happen ?
