How to fix tiles to a wall without plaster

lesleyd3, Jul 25, 4:28am
We have been gifted some very old ceramic tiles and want to use them as a splash back in the laundry. However we would like to do this without permanently fixing them to the wall in order to preserve them as an antique in their own right.
Ideas how? Wooden beading has been suggested but how can you keep that clean?
Ideas appreciated and thanks in advance

Double sided tape.

As something that will hold for years?

Set them up as per normal tiles with spacers but use self adhesive velcro dots to hold them in place. Then take the spacers out and neatly silicon the gaps. Run a knife around the tiles when you want to remove them

That sounds possible. Thanks

fix them on a piece of plywood, with a frame and just lightly fix them in your laundry for now.

Put them back in the box and leave them in the garage for them to be thrown out at a later date or use the tiles properly theres no such thing as antiques, either you are using them or not.

I'd do that. plus put screw holes through the ply, where grouting will go, before fastening the tiles, so you can then fasten the whole thing to the wall - essentially creating a mosaic panel with the tiles on the ply.

Or use them for something that shows them off permanently - a tabletop, framed wall art, etc.

We are getting close to the tiling stage on this project. Any more ideas would be appreciated. If we were to fix them to thin line does anyone know an adhesive that could be removable? Is silicon best?
Thanks

Double sided picture hanging tape is very very strong

Is there a particular brand name for that?

Silicone adhesive - available from Mitre 10 - use sparingly if you wish to remove at a later date

Depend on the grade.

Overhead sign panels on the motorway are held to their frames by 3M double sided tape :)

Best thing is Command strips by 3M - totally hold all sizes and easily removable

Thanks for the ideas we will look into the 3M suggestions

Tile it to a thin particle board and leave enough space to put in screws into the wall behind it, then grout over the screw heads. Remove the screws and take the whole board with you if you want to remove them for whatever reason.
