im trying to get away from adding lime or sand but straight from bag and water
im getting mixed results as some online calculators say i need 3 x 20kg ?

3 x 20kg sounds good then, also depends how much waste while doing it if using fast setting plaster.
This I believe is good for indoor, gives more working time :

Putting plaster on exterior brick will suck in so quick, by the time you're mixing the 2nd bag, the 1st bagful placed on the wall will be hard.
Is it interior or exterior? makes a big difference in what you can use

I would be a good idea to install a latex over the substrate before plastering, this will help with it sticking
