Taking into account costs location etc? We are looking at a brand that is suitable for Central Otago but not hugely expensive just for the holiday house, a couple recommended but pricey so what have you installed? TIA

We have a Mitsi in our holiday house - cost about $3000 (nearly two years ago). The property is in Kerikeri and installers had to come from Whangarei. The lounge/dining/kitchen is relatively small, smaso unit is on the small size - efficient. We have also installed a Mitsi in our Whangarei rental B&B - again relatively small unit in lounge and price around $3000 - same installers as Kerikeri.
At home in Auckland we have a ceiling one in middle of large tv/lounge - only way to go as no suitable outside wall. This is vented thru the roof space to outside terrace. Very unobtrusive and efficient Panasonic. and cost about $4500 some three years ago.
The main thing is to shop round and discuss various brands suitable to your needs and deal with a well established installation firm - there are "cowboys" out there who know "diddlysquat". Word of mouth recommendations help too. Best of Luck. Capricorngirl

I have 5 houses and have put a Panasonic in all. Absolutely no problems with any of them. Search around for quotes on installation, They can vary alot.

Thanks. Am looking at Mitsubishi for Central Otago. Service providers have recommended Daikin or Toshiba for Central only because of the extreme weather conditions especially in winter time with things freezing up.

Mitsubishi, daikon, Panasonic, Toshiba = much the muchness, can’t go wrong. I would have said Fujitsu too except I’m still annoyed they claimed they were the most efficient for years and just got called out on that as a lie. They’re still good, but not better.

Mitsubishi are good and reliable. and not to expensive. my electrician told me his boss only uses Mitsubishi as faults/problems are very few and far between on them

Much of a Muchness i think. We have a Panasonic in the lounge, a whisper quiet Mistubishi in the bedroom and put in a Fujitsu in one of our rentals both of these we got for around $1700 installed.

I've had several over the years & I like my current Daikin best . it's a large one & heats a 15m hall plus the five rooms off that hall & it's quiet. I've had frosts up to -9.

Toshiba, the inventors of inverter heatpumps in 1980, owned by carrier, the original inventors of split system air conditioners in 1961 (produced their first window rattler models in 1953) . Been working with them since 1980, still my number one, and the only brand i will own myself, tried and worked on all breeds.
Cheap units are only cheap upfront, long term when you have to toss it out due to rust or dieing, makes them far more expensive long term(also take into account poor performance and lousy economy) But if you think chinese cars are as good as anything else, by all means go for the cheap junk, installers will be happy to charge you again to replace it 3 -5 years or so.
Ps, if i had to choose a second choice, it would be daikin. I Do not like fujitsu or mitsubishi (either range), had little experience with panasonic.

If you are in a cold frost snow climate the only one to get is a Daikin.

I'm in Auckland and have a Mitsubishi. Installed it 2 yrs ago, cost about $2300 installed but it's only a smaller one (5.5kW I think). Cost will obviously depend on the size of the unit and if there's any tricky ducting etc. I love mine - easy to use, has never missed a beat and VERY efficient, even with the cooling setting on 24/7 last week! My daily power bill only rises by a dollar or so. I agree that all the recognised brand ones are pretty much equal. Central Otago I'm guessing you'd need one that has good performance as a heater AND a cooler!

Most components are all made in China regardless of brand name . But stick to known brand names for service & repairs all pretty much the same . If get severe frosts i look at its heat output at - 15 oC ambient some are better than others higher the KW s the better .
