Where to buy wood for bedside table?

indigo1, Aug 1, 9:15pm
I have been tasked with making something similar to this http://www.lilyjaneboutique.co.nz/collections/furniture/products/cubby & http://www.lilyjaneboutique.co.nz/collections/furniture/products/minimal-side-table - where is the best place to pick-up the wood? Obviously I don't need a great deal. is somewhere like Placemakers, mitre 10 the best?

any timber merchant would have the stock

All the big box stores sell dressed clears. It is inside, with dowels, cut panels, mouldings etc. All sorts available. Although its not cheap, having already been machined and dressed.

I think you can buy pre made wooden bench tops for about $100 from bunnings. Something like that would have enough timber to do what you want.

Bunnings or Mitre 10. Timber merchants sometimes specialise in a particular wood, like macrocarpa, etc. So if you want a special wood, you could look for those too.

Nice design.I know there is posts roughly this size, drive through at mitre ten
that would suit the legs.demolition yard would have wood for the top.old wood would look better.

or lumber, depending on yer roots

As a furniture maker, it always astounds me how much things are for retail. I just clicked on op's links and saw the prices.

Looks like white pine to me so wouldn't be too expensive. Placemakers should have it.

zoopa, Aug 4, 11:04am
Do you mean kahikatea (white pine)? The pine in that furniture looks like radiata to me.

budgel, Aug 4, 9:02pm
Sometimes a second hand shop will have old bed ends that have nice timber in them that can be re used for smallish items like in the OP.

ebygum1, Aug 4, 9:03pm
It actually depends on it's size, goes from scantling to boards to lumber. These terms are not used much these days

Awesome idea! I hadn't thought of doing things like that! We've got lots of wee mini woodworking projects coming up and I reckon I could find a lot doing that. (http://ana-white.com/2013/05/-

able-plans this is my next one for the spare room.) I am going to scour op shops lol

probably never used in NZ :D

Simple construction, basic design and cheap (radiata pine). You can buy the legs too. What is retail price?
Don't tell me - it's too much!

alan_at_ecotech, Aug 10, 2:03am
Yes, probably radiata. kahikatea would be next to impossible to buy now. As a native tree it can only be sustainably harvested.

I'm surprised they sell anything.
