Sealing a new outdoor table.

stevo2, Feb 16, 6:27am
I have nearly finished building a 3.6mtx1.2mt cantilevered (off a rock) aussie hardwood outdoor table for a client but they want me to fill the splits etc with resin and seal it.
I did the same for them when we built the house, they look stunning but are inside and wont get wet. I filled with resin then sanded dropping to 2000 grit w&dry, then sealed with a satin 2 pot industrial sealer
I think the resin may crack as the timber moves as it dries and gets wet again.
Anyone got any suggestions? Was thinking maybe beeswax?

The decking is 200x50 NZ Redwood bandsawn, the rock weighed 3.7 tonne

Any wax or oil will need re-coating very frequently to maintain any protective film to stop moisture causing mould and sun causing splits and degradation of the surface.

That's something you don't see every day.

Yes, its a bit unique, but the whole house is full of unique features and designs.

Pretty cool table. I do't think resin will work as it will be affected by UV
I'd try and talk the clients into letting it weather

Whatever you end up doing, I would suggest you do it on the underside as well or else it will cup. I think a decking oil or spar varnish would work because they both have UV inhibitors.

wow that is really stunning. I would look at a marine product solution for this . Lots of wood in marine environments needing effective solutions for the conditions.
question:
How did you secure the table into the rock? Is it just wedged in ?
How did you open the strip of rock to receive the table?

Good questions.
We drilled 3/ 157mm dia holes into the rock approx 500mm deep on a 45 degree angle. We then had 3/ 114mm dia 9mm wall thickness pipes made up to resemble a 45 degree elbow and had them galved, they were then grouted in and the table fitted on top.
Yes the top is checked 30mm into the rock so you dont see the end of the table. The decking is checked 25mm under the rock so you think the rock sits on top of the deck.
Checkouts were done with an angle grinder.
The rock sits on a reinforced footing 3mt long x 2mt wide x 300mm deep.
HD 12 steel chemsetted into rock and into footing holds the rock firmly.

id be surprised if anything stuck to 2000 grit sanding. its just too smooth. id expect peeling off fairly soon if its laquer.

Wrong, I did the staircase 2 years ago, finished with 2000grit then clear finished with a 2 pot industrial product. Not a lacquer. 1 coat of sealer then 2 topcoats. It still looks stunning and in perfect condition. Its not uv stable so not suitable for the outside table.

Absolutely correct, I found out the hard way after spending many hours sanding a lovely macra table and polyurethaned it, the underside not done and one piece of it has bowed, incidently it is the only piece which appears not to be heart wood.
Love that table by the way very, clever.

Ok, I started on the sanding process today.
The specialist recommend filling the splits, holes etc with "International HX9000" 2 pack resin.
I will then sand that back to smooth dropping to about 150 to 240 grit on our "Rupes" random orbital sander, then 2 coats of Totara Oil.
It will need oiling every 12 months

Hi Stevo2, where can I purchase this resin, I have googled it but have had no luck finding any, thanks.

That looks just awsome, I just love different and quirky things. Love it.

Hi, if wanting a good longlasting finish, which is uv stable, but is a shiny finish, you could use a product called polyaspartic resin, can also be used on concrete furniture and floors.

Sorry I got the code wrong. Its HT9000 resin made by International which is Epiglass.
Widely available but I bought it from a company in Tga that deals with car painters and joiners etc. Mega10 also have it.
