Keeping birds out of my grapevine

My vine is on a fence. Last year tried the black netting, but came home one day and found a thrush strangled in it. Don't want to kill them just scare them away. Have a blackbird here at the moment that chases our cat. He thinks he owns our garden.

White netting, just through the fruiting zone?

Forget the netting. Get brown paper bags around the bunches you want to protect. The grapes will still ripen in the bags and the birds will be safe, but thwarted.

they are into my currants already

You can string up old CDs. We did this by our raspberries and they flash in the sun so scare the birds. Not 100% effective but not too bad.

I had really good results one year by tying up some holographic tinsel.
I know it looks a bit silly, but it was in an out of the way area and worked well to keep the birds off my grape.
The theory is they don't like the shine - you can buy a holographic tape to hang around, I just happened to have some tinsel. lol.
