This is one of 2 trees in a nearby park which seem to have overwintering Monarch butterflies on them. Can anyone ID it please, so that I can notify the Monarch Butterfly Trust
Crytomeria japonica or Japanese cedar. And yep she oak, or casuarina cunninghamii. Both shelter belt species in rural areas

thank you, all info adds to what is known of these beautiful butterflies & where they go over winter. The last generation in each year stops breeding over winter, & they shelter in certain trees, typically conifers, just coming out on very fine days. Then in spring they fly, mate & produce eggs to start the first of several generations over summer. More info on the monarch butterfly trust website if anyone is interested in finding out more

It’s actually cryptomeria with a ‘p’. Makes very good firewood for stating the fire!
We used to have monarchs wintering on a larch near where I lived. It was a beautiful sight every winter.
Since the public registrations are closed, you must have an invite from a current member to be able to register and post in this thread.
