Transplanting a small shrub/tree

Hi - I am going to attermpt to transplant a small persimmon tree. Friend wants it gone, I want one, so I thought I'd have a go and if it dies well nothing really lost.
Is it a good idea to "wrench" the tree a couple of weeks before the move? I seem to recall hearing that was recommended technique but I can't remember why. I'll also do a bit of a trim of the branches - but since it won't have leaves would that be advisable still? To reduce the transpiration rate while it re-established itself?
Any other tips?

Wrenching is good to do in late autumn with a view to transplanting in winter as it forces the tree to put out new white root before winter.
Doing it now though I'd just get on with it as it will be bursting into growth soon.
Trim the top back by half, dig it out with as much root as you can disturbing it as little as you can and you should be fine.

OK - sounds like a plan. Here's hoping it survives the move!

if it is small then I would just do it. Chances of it surviving are good as long as you look after it once transplanted. Besides, what do you have to lose
