Digging around ponga tree

I'm wanting to dig a fish pond close to a 4m tall ponga, and thinking of digging the pond around a third to half of the tree, to a depth of about 1.5 foot. I imagine this will cut through a fair amount of the trees shallower roots, and before beginning would appreciate advice as to whether this might be too much and could harm the tree ?

Pongas have a ball of roots, you can dig quite close to them.

You won't kill the ponga, it will invade your pond with its roots when it recovers

They don't have long roots like most trees and plants. They have a mass of fibery roots in a compact ball.
