Rusted metal guttering

kaddiew, Jan 21, 2:06pm
My coastal house has early 90s chunky metal guttering with metal flashing recessed below it. Underside (only) of guttering, plus the flashing, is pitted/bubbling, and have had a painter quote to have it sanded, treated and repainted. Two corners of the flashing are rusting through, and a plumber tells me they can't be cut out/replaced (or not worth it), and at best cap them or 'bog them up' if I go ahead with the repair/paint job. Says the inside of the guttering itself appears to be sound.

Replacing all the guttering isn't an option atm, but am I throwing my money away getting it all treated and repainted, in a coastal area? Thanks.

I will never use metal guttering again especially by the sea as it always goes rusty.
However the rusty bits could be painted with zinc paint then with an acrylic top coat.
If there are holes, make some galvanised iron patches and pop rivet them over the holes. That will last a few more years.

Thanks for the advice. Agree, metal guttering and sea air are not compatible! The actual holes are in 2 areas of flashing only (none in/on the guttering itself). but the pitting/bubbles on underside of gutter plus on the flashing, are right around the house, so labour intensive to treat & paint it all. I can't do any of it and the painter won't do any patching, so it would be 2 different tradesmen.

$1500 for new spouting? Plumber did a quick walk around and mentioned $3000 plus GST, for plastic spouting, and I suspect that was for materials only. If it were as cheap as you said, it certainly wouldn't be worth paying that much just for a repair/paint that won't last.

Thanks, haven't yet accepted any quote, so should do some more homework!

I did my own using a laser level for about $800.00. If your house is on a level site and single storey it isn't that difficult.

Mine was on a difficult / sloping section but still managed it.

That sounds very cheap. Even with a single level home on flat land, I'm physically unable to undertake such work.

Check if copper is an option. The price of copper has dropped heaps in a year (50% perhaps, I haven't checked, that is a guess).

Oh, copper still looks expensive. www.infomine.com/investment/metal-prices/copper/all/

Thanks for looking!

Whether I go for repairs or replacement, it will still all have to be done by tradesmen, so I guess I'll need to cost out both.

$26 per lineal metre should easier get your gutter replaced if it is all single story. Most houses are about 45-60 metres around so $1250 + gst should get it done. My advice is to use continuous metal but get Zam instead of coloursteel. By the sounds of it OP has a metal fascia with a little lip for the gutter to sit on? This is terrible stuff and I recommend getting it replaced totally. Remember with patching, it will be a lot worse on the inside where it doesn't get washed and I'd say you are wasting time and money

Thanks! I'm not sure if the gutter type is as you describe, but here's a photo.

Get a quote from someone who just does spouting.

golfdiver, Jan 23, 2:09am
Yeah that looks like standard 125 box on metal fascia. I'd replace both with Zam and use polyethylene brackets so there is no metal on metal contact allow just under $50 a lineal for both

Thanks everyone. You can tell I have no idea about such things, so I appreciate all the input.

We had Zincalume spouting installed 5km from the sea. It went very rusty after a few years. We put plastic spouting on instead.

golfdiver, Jan 23, 2:21am
Zam is not zincalume. Plastic looks really cheap on a nice home

kaddiew, Jan 23, 7:34pm
Thanks, yes, I'm thinking now that I should. I wasn't previously aware there were tradesmen who just specialised in guttering alone.

golfdiver, Jan 23, 9:59pm
OP has a very much standard sized gutter. It is just in the box profile. Replacing the fascia is much more important and the tradie will need to measure it so he can get the same size. That is the important thing here.

What area are you in OP? I'm at the beach on my phone do I can't tell. I may know somebody in the trade in your area

Kapiti Coast. I'm still thinking it through atm, but a name would be handy - Thanks!
