Some hebes but they may be small

I see you're in chch. Tibouchina won't grow there, too cold. But yes, there are heaps of purple flowered shrubs, just check they can handle frosts.

Sweet pea tree

A dwarf magnolia? Many of the smaller varieties only get to 2-3m and should handle the Chch climate.

whaddabout a purple rose? some roses are shrub like or can be grown as a hedge. Of course, I can't think of any at the moment!

Thanks for posting the name. have been trying to remember that plant name for days - the next plant to add to my garden. :-)

OP. if an easily controlled vine is suitable, I highly recommend a Petrea voluilis - Sandpaper Vine.
http://www.gardens.co.nz/PlantoftheWeek.cfm?NLID=142 This photo is from my garden a few weeks ago. it flowers like this October - November, and again March - April. a lovely display which receives a lot of comments. https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/437476179.jpg

Purple hydrangeas look lovely and the flowers last all summer.

Won't Peonies grow well there? I'd be so envious!
You could select some purple Dalhias, they make an awesome impact over summer.
I've just bought a gorgeous purple zantedeschia, which I am in love with! Salvias have some purples and easy to increase.
Wisteria.
Purple and lime green are eye catching . maybe throw in some of that colour?! Heuchera Lime Marmalade http://livingfashion.co.nz/variety/heuchera-lime-marmalade/ for lower growing patches of brightness and Acacia Limelight http://www.plantman.co.nz/afawcs0158272/CATID=0/SUBID=106/ID=2843/SID=175150446/productdetails.html

Wow thanks you have given me lots of choices, now to hunt some down.

Wheelz has a good suggestion for a dramatic colour scheme-purple with lime green.A good purple rose with strong perfume is Blackberry Nip.you could have it with lime green zinnias.Happy hunting-get what you love!

Port wine magnolia? Cherry pie? Catnip? Boronia?

Now that it's daylight, I can read my plant label. Lol. I have two Tibouchina "blue moon". The had lovely purple flowers when I bought them. (Well I bought one, one was a gift a few weeks later).

Only I have put them in pots as they are frost sensitive, and although placed them under trees for the frost protection, they've dropped many of their leaves as they have dried out. I am going to replant them, but directly into the garden. As soon as I can find a suitable spot. I had liked the idea of them in big pots leading into a garden 'room' but obviously my idea was dumb. Lol

I have purple roses Ebb Tide, teamed up with a combination of silver grey Teucrium hedges and dark green Ligustrum hedges.
