Waterproofing under tiles

We are getting our kitchen, laundry and bathroom tiled. The company that have quoted have said they will waterproof under the shower tiles and the bath splashback. However, we have had lots of issues with floods in bathroom, laundry and toilet (w.mach, dishwasher and around toilet) so would we be better off specifying waterproofing underneath all the floor tiles too or is this overkill? As an example, hubby has pulled up the vinyl around the dishwasher and the mdf underneath is partially rotted due to occasional dishwasher floods. Thanks.

Yes it is part of the code to waterproof under the tiles and up the wall as far as the tiles go. You will need to put down tile underlay [hardies 7mm sheet] first before you start. If you are worried about future flooding, why not put in a floor waste out of sight so it doesn't flood.

That's interesting, doesn't give me a lot of confidence in our contractor if he isn't quoting to do the work to code. Would a floor waste require Building consent?

probably not, it is not a requirement under the code and quite a simple installment just to hook into another waste. BTW it is only a code requirement to waterproof under wet areas, your kitchen and possibly laundry would be exempt.

We are having to waterproof bathroom floor and toilet even though it's been fine for 60 years.

Bathroom for sure, toilet is not considered a wet area but no harm in doing it.

replace MDF with treated product such as construction ply of a suitable thickness problem solved.

Why are these areas flooding anyway?. Bad plumbing connections?

Just the odd accident over time, combined with small children. blocked washing machine drain, faulty dishwasher etc.
What happened to newtecs posts?

Cheap Chinese made tap did a good job of destroying our raised bamboo flooringIin our kitchen.

It's not an overkill if the area is constantly being flooded. Better to fix the cause of the flood though really lol.

However, it's all a waste of time if it's not done properly - i.e. the cabinets are fitted and so the tiler/waterproofer can't get his membrane under there.

Waterproofing alone will cost about $50 a m2.
