Agree with imagine4 but I have also learnt to live with them. They were here before us and will be here long after we gone

Just buy some "rip chord", not the pre mixed stuff.
A spray pack with heavy dose and do your doorways and base boards around the house.
Spray through out your garage and any out buildings, especially wood piles.
A hand sprayer with lighter dose, do inside your house around windows and lights.
Do once or twice a year

Are these the big native cock roaches that tend to live singulalry (or pairs) or heaps of the small ones that live in colonies in the house.

I get the big ones but you only ever see them on there own, I was finding one or two a week. Wasn't aware I should be spreying for them. But if they were the nasty ones that infest (I have had these in an Auckland accodation block) hundreds of them in one place, then yes I'd be spreying them

And don't forget to spray in the ceiling. We had the house sprayed professionally and (dead) cockroaches were dropping out of the light fittings!

speeedy1, Jan 18, 6:27pm
It has been very dry for sometime now; they'll be coming in more frequently seeking refuge, food and moisture.
Those smaller scurrying ones that infest are the ones that need eradicating from the home. The large black ones seldom come inside; they are quite docile and can be relocated easily when discovered. BV2 works well, along with Ripcord as smallwoods mentioned. Just remember, treat the stuff with caution, if it kills life it is no good for us either.

my jr just covers them in slobber then follows them around the floor with his nose . if the stop moving they get pushed along a bit . its so funny to watch but makes a mess of the floor

bug bomb your ceiling space and you will stop a lot of them

I had one inside my pants today. took the pants off the rack, was about to put my foot in before spotting the browny-black shiny body of a big daddy cocky stuck to the inside of the leg. I screamed and threw the pants out onto the deck. I got up enough courage to shake them out and it scuttled off down a crack. YUCK! I really hate them with a passion! I hate the way they hide silently and secretly, then run so fast along the ground when discovered. My son tells me they can live for a week without a head. Fab !

As someone said above, they're coming inside looking for water and food as it's been so hot. BARRIER SPRAY all the way ! Just coat your door and window frames and any exit/entry points (like behind kitchen appliances, drains in the floor etc) with the barrier spray or rip cord. And be careful to shake any laundry that's been on the floor - they seem to love hiding in pants !

Best thing is products containing hydramethylnon. We had a huge problem in the book shop when the sewer and storm water were separated in our area. We tried everthing and were getting desperate when I found an article on this new substance so I got the gel bait form from pestrid in Hamilton and it worked really quickly.

I haven't seen another cockroache and that was about 3 years ago so I gave the rest of the bait to another bookshop owner who was surrounded by ethnic restaurants, his problem cleared up too. The best thing is they go away to die, get eaten by other cockroaches who then die the whole area gets cleaned up in quick smart time.

they are quite hard to kill ive picked one up in a teatowel and wrung the tea towel out under the tap then flicked it out side the the cock roach while walking in a cock eyed fashion was still walking and bit crushed in the middle

We occasionally see the Gisborne cockies on our wall. If low enough down we grab them with a tissue and flush down the toilet. They sure can run fast.
Our arrived after a caravan and awning that had been next door was shifted and their home was disturbed. I have a ranchslider right beside my bed and it had no screen door on it. Left open in the summer time it was not nice to wake up to a tickling feeling on my face and to discover a large black cockroach on my pillow. A screen door fixed that problem, but we leave a door open for the dogs to go in and out, and that's the cockies' usual entry. Yuk, I hate them, but not as bad as huhu beetles.

Barrier spray won't do much for the flying ones.

Personally I'd rather live with a few cockies coming in from the garden (the lizard loves them anyway) than poison the enviroment I live in 24/7 with something as nasty as Ripcord.

kaddiew, Jan 22, 7:21pm
I hate them too. I have screens on doors and windows, but they still manage to get in, via ceiling downlights, holes for pipes in kitchen cupboard, even the narrowest gaps between sill and windowframe on an angled bay window. Brick house here, with the breather holes at the bottom, through which the Gisbornes also enter to take up residence in walls and ceiling. Ugh.

We've lived in this house about 6mths & had sprayed it for bugs before we moved in & found a few dead ones . but now, am seeing at least 3 each week. I'm not sure what type they are - one ran out from behnd the d/washer today & looked a large black one (Gisborne ? ) but often see a light brown smaller type roach on our bathroom walls. If I was to use the RipCord barrier spray around all the doors & windows, is it OK for our cat to be around with? Hate the little roach buggers, but 6mths ago would have run a mile rather than grab the bugger to flush down the loo!

kaddiew, Feb 1, 1:38am
Sounds like Gisborne, as well as the smaller native one. I get both inside. I don't know about Ripcord, but the strong stuff the pest controller barrier sprayed on my house exterior is deemed safe for cats, and my cat is fine. I hate the buggers too!

we are having a big problem with Cockroaches and have looked back over previous sites and see you used to get a Black flag Spray called ant and roach spray. I couldn't find it in any of our supermarkets so wonder if it is out of stock now. We have bombed the whole house, put baits every where we can think of ,and placed traps out also , but they still keep coming. I wonder what a professional would do we haven't?
The house is spotless with no food or any food products around . Our loose food is in sealed containers in the pantry .
Any help would be appreciated.

If you can afford it i would get redkill in to spray for cockrocahces as we had the same problem as well as a mouse problem when we first moved in, They said and i believe them that their product is much more potient then anything you can buy off the shelf. We have had the occassional cockroache but nothing as bad as it had been.

onion5, Jan 16, 4:47pm
Thanks for that
i think that is the only option now.

kateley, Jan 16, 5:01pm
When I first moved here we had a terrible cockroach problem. they really freak me out.
I buy the 'outdoor barrier' type flyspray from the supermarket - some last 3 months but try to get the 6month one. Then spray around all your door and window frames, as well as the garage door.
The cockroaches die when they crawl over the barrier. So they do still come inside but only for a few feet before they die.
Also, don't have your wood pile or bark mulch up close to the house, this is where they like to live.
I still get lots outside, but hardly ever see them in the house now. If I do, I know it's time to do the barrier spray again. Only costs about $10 per can.

We have a jack Russel cross and he kills anything that moves smaller than him. Also had the electric things in plug . seemed to work Had no problems this yr We ar Torbay Auckland.

thanks for all the help, we initially used the kiwi care barrier liquid spray but i think they are still inside house ,what brand is the spray can barrier called? As i mentioned earlier ,apparently black flag had one once" Black flag ant and roache spray", but i can't seem to locate it here ,has any one used that?. have contacted a professional insect man so waiting to see how much he charges.we do have a wood pile , pallets, and a compost pile open .

Google has some

jhan, Jan 16, 10:25pm
We found that they were breeding, living, staying on the tops of our wooden windows. We purchased a special spray from Bunnings which did get rid of them and they haven't been back. (Hopefully not famous last words) I think we got on to the them pretty quick, they came into the house via junk mail. We stopped the junk mail.

gabbysnana, Jan 17, 1:41am
there are pheromones in the ink of junk mail. get in the habit of not bringing it inside.

kateley, Jan 17, 1:54am
The barrier spray I've got at the moment is Mortein, but I'm pretty sure that Black Flag make one also - they will be in the same spot as ordinary fly spray, maybe a shelf higher
