Mine have been slow to get going, have had the first red one tho. Got all sorts of varieties growing in all sorts of places, the ones that are just growing in the garden amongst the flowers are doing the best this year. Hows yours going?

laspaz, Jan 20, 11:21pm
Most of mine seem to be struggling. The indeterminates are climbing slowly, and the fruit is small but plentiful. The determinates which I cage are looking dried out and a bit blighty underneath. They are setting lots of small fruit however.

The cherry toms are doing well!

lil_spaztik04, Jan 20, 11:27pm
slow :(

socram, Jan 20, 11:36pm
Three plants planted in a bag of tomato compost, about a week before Labour weekend, (now partly shielded by scaffolding since mid December) on a westerly facing wall, but "Sweet 100" cherry tomatoes - 102 picked so far and tasty.
Plant number 2, planted alongside "Campari" - 32 medium sized picked so far.

Plant #3, 'Dr Walter", larger tomatoes and nothing picked so far and only about 10 fruited anyway. Watered at least daily so it may well be a lot to do with the variety.

Slow here too and with smaller fruit than last year. There is quite a crop though so hopefully not too much longer. Not going to be able t make as much sauce and relish as last year by the looks of it.

I had my first few tomatoes before Christmas but the crop has only really come in during the last few weeks. I have grown beefsteak and dad's delight but while there are plenty of fruit the flavour is disappointing this year. I think the cool spring weather buggered them up.

I had a grafted tomato 'Alboran' which grew really really fast and fruited really early - 1st tomatoes early Dec. It got to about 3m tall and then seemed to collapse. Looking really yellow and shrivelled, so I guess that's the end of that one although its still got ripening fruit on it. Finally got the first of the cherry tomatoes in the last week, and the beefsteak and the brandywine the first toms are just starting to ripen now . Very slow unproductive year - but the beans are doing really well - far to many for me, am giving 80% of them away. Sweetcorn has done very poorly as well. Only 1m tall and already producing pollen but theres no cobs and silks yet. dad had the opposite problem, produced silks when they were only 20cm high. think i'll go back to growing from seed rather than buying punnets.

Plenty of growth, tomatoes still very green waiting, waiting. To be honest when everyone was planting tomatoes the weather was cool, overcast and really not alot of warm sunny days. I remember people were having this discussion back then, sooooo be patient, soon you may have a glut !
Cheap per kg in the shops now too which is good.

Mine have been slow too. now having some fruit. though smaller than usual.

Very good - especially the ones with the "pot collars" I bought from the "Red Shed". All my tomatoes are grown in pots (tiny garden), and these pot collar thingimees are the bomb, especially in this hot weather. I got mine on special, 3 for $10, and worth every cent, too.

They're about 125 mm deep (too dark to go measure), with a hole about 200 mm round to plant the plant into the pot (room for a tripod of canes in the middle. ). All water and fertilizer goes into the collar and drip-feeds into the pot. no probs with damp foliage (rust, etc), either. Thoroughly recommend them to pot growers.

Best flavour and size - Black Knight (also from the Red Shed), Sweet 100's always a goer and favorite, rest are a mix of old favs - moneymaker, beefsteak, and an acid free one. All coming ripe rapidly now with the hot weather, putting a lot through the Ninja and freezing them like that.

They were slow to start - although we also put them in later this year.
Been going for a couple of weeks now - going like mad now.
Passionfruit is ripening now too.

cantabman1, Jan 21, 12:39pm
best season ever for me, planted out in September from Odering's Nursery plants, and picked my first 1 on Christmas eve.I have 9 Toms, and fruit for Africa.
The secret I have found is to plant in pots with a little chicken manure under the eves facing the North;any late frosts don't get them.
The same deal applies to swan plants, and lemons.

holly-rocks, Jan 21, 3:12pm
I have been growing tomatoes for 10 years and this year is by far the worst year. They really are pathetic! Sad face!

tigra, Jan 21, 3:28pm
My fruit is still green and a bit sparse but the plants themselves are looking good with good growth and no wilt etc. Am picking it will be a late season.

jia5, Jan 21, 3:51pm
Mine are doing well, I have already made my first lot of tomato relish. And like cantab man grow mine 'under the eves facing the North;any late frosts don't get them.'

tourer100, Jan 21, 9:31pm
Gees seems nearly everyone having same problem this year. Grew allmine from seed this year apart from one which is a Brandywine pink, had one from that yesterday, and a couple from one of mine, the rest have lots of set fruit now thank goodness, was getting worried. Have about 45 plants scattered around, so we shall see if its as good as last year. Passionfruit is only about 1 year old now and has heaps on it, yummmm, cant wait for them.

devine-spark, Jan 21, 9:32pm
Mine doing ok after a dose of mildew, all good now tho. Very productive.

meoldchina, Jan 21, 10:02pm
I made a big mistake last year - I put my old tomato plants (which still had a few fruit on them) onto the compost heap. Now, I am finding tomato plants popping-up all over my garden wherever I have used the compost. I have weeded-out dozens of seedlings, but also allowed some to grow and they are doing very well. The tomato plants that I bought from the Nelson Hospice Shop ($2 for about a dozen, of unknown variety) are superb. However, all have been very slow to ripen. ( I think I'll use the tomato with sunglasses icon - it seems appropriate).

newtec1, Jan 21, 11:49pm
Same old story, slow and very small, and when they do ripen it's a race between me and the birds.

julzienz, Jan 22, 2:21am
Lots and lots and lots of little greens. If they all ripen at the same time, there will be a tonne of relish.

dlightful, Jan 22, 2:22pm
Mine are doing quite well considering i put them down late 22nd November and took pics 30 days later.Marked steaks on all 8 plants last week and total growth for seven days was 59.5'' - average per plant 7.43 but the two biggest had grown 9.5'' and 10'' in seven days.
Two weeks after planting.

that is great.

ford_transit, Jan 22, 7:11pm
another bad year, pulling out plants weekly as the psyllid does it's damage

deanna14, Jan 22, 10:12pm
Growing fast in the tunnel house and slow outside. On the other hand the cucumbers in the tunnel house are going crazy.

korbo, Jan 23, 2:29pm
sure is a race between us and the birds. just not sure what birds are eating them. one yesterday, as big as a grapefruit, and when taken off, here was a big hole (which we didnt see), anyway hubby cut the peice off popped it sliced up in the frypan and had it on toast. very sweet he said. but we cant remember the name. planted about 8 this year, and the name tags seem to have dissappeared.
