Fuchsia excorticata- NZ Tree Fushia-k?tukutuku

After only seeing these growing in urban situations where they may reach 3 or 4 metres, I was surprised to see some in natural bush at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth recently (down by the water wheel), where they would easily be 10m or more, and quite a substantial trunk. Not the reasonably dense shrubby tree we see in our gardens, but very spread out and fighting for any chink of light in the top canopy.

It's been very pretty here this year, lots of flowers

A quick search found this page.

And yes they will grow into a respectable tree in given time and space. Pukeiti gradens has some impressive ones as well.

A better photo of Fuchsia for you, freshly taken. Unfortunately it is being smothered by a hideous vine that is taking over the native bush, I suppose eventually a lot of the bush will die because of it.

That vine is predominant here too we pull it off the trees and uproot it, it doesnt actually strangle the trees but forms a canopy over the top which cuts out the light and prevents seedlings from growing, we are told it is a native as well ! don't know its name however, it must be spread by the seeds although I haven't seen flowers as tiny seedlings are coming up alover the place even up here around the house

we have some plants at the garden centre/nursery I work at. Try googling Alter-Natives nursery,

The purple layered flower with the small pink one peeping out is nOT a native Fuschia! It is a nasty invasive thing whose name I am having a senior moment on . Ah. According to my elderly Common Weeds book it is Himalayan Honeysuckle aka Leycesteria formosa.

God, am I wrong again, Oh my! Funny, but I wondered when I was taking the photo that it didn't really look like the fuchsia, it's quite similar in colour.

It's a nasty ugly thing, there is no controlling it in the bush, it completely smothers everything, and seeds very easily. It is easier to control in the home garden if you find it soon enough growing in the shrubbery.

How the heck would that get here in the bush off the beaten track?

ianab, Mar 5, 1:37am
I think the seeds are spread by birds? It's been established in NZ for a long time.

The fuschia looks like this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuchsia_excorticata#mediaviewer/File:Fuchsia_excorticata.jpg The tree is quite easy to identify in the bush, the bark is quite orange and flaky, not really any other native tree that looks like it.
Bonus trivia, the berries are edible, and quite nice.

Thanks, yes, I know the tree now, to think I had it growing in my garden not so long ago. I should have known better

Howdy community.
I am trying to find either seed, seedlings or rooted cuttings of the NZ tree fushia. Anyone got some?

Try Taupo Native Nursery - I'm sure they'd have it.

Can't help sorry, but very pleased to report that this beauty is returning naturally to our area which we are planting out in natives, also several other species such as totara, hebe, cabage tree and many native grasses, it is so rewarding to witness this recovery.
