Problem conifer needs felling, how much?

Hello,
I've got a conifer that was planted in a very silly spot by previous owners. It's 2m from house corner, and 2m from house power lines, but worst of all it's shading the vege garden! Now obviously we can't have that so it's got to go! It's in quite a tricky spot and it's a rather large specimen. How much would I be expecting to pay! North Canterbury. TIA

We had an enormous conifer-35 years old(WHY did they plant it in the first place!) which towered over a 2 storey house, blocking light and sun, touching the windows, and dropping carpets of needles every day.If you were in the Waikato,i would recommend the lovely young man we had to remove it.He was a qualified arborist as well as tree feller. It was extremely dangerous, having main trunk divided into three trunks at different angles. Two men worked for 8 hours at $100 an hour(included both) One climbed the tree attached to ropes and abseiled up and down.He cut all the side branches and they dropped straight down,so it would have been no problem if in a confined space. My husband was able to help by dragging the branches away, which aided the task.I have heard that in big cities, cowboys rip people off,so I do hope you find someone honest and skilled

I should have mentioned that after cutting all side branches off,he went up to the top again and made his way down the trunk cutting a couple of metres off at a time, which fell straight down-not the whole thing.

Christchurch! That sounds like quite an expensive tree. Mine doesn't sound nearly as big as yours and only one trunk to the top. But thanks $100/hr for 2 people is a good start. We will also be disposing of the branches ourselves.

This may sound odd, but try your rural fire brigade. They sometimes do this sort of thing as a fund-raiser, and they are trained in tree felling.

Advertise on the supermarket notice board.
Ask if any one wants to cut it down and keep the wood.
Now is a good time to cut and dry wood for next winter.

Four nice straight parts of the trunks were taken(free) to build a cedar hot tub near Hamilton. The rest was taken for firewood, which seemed like a waste for nice wood, but couldnt find anyone who wanted it for timber.

Hi guys, we intend to use the wood for firewood or other purposes thanks, and wont have a problem getting hold of someone to do the job, just trying to get an idea of the normal charging for this kinda thing. All of a sudden I have a garden! yay!

Hi Forrie-The removal of the tree at our place has been absolutely wonderful, and i can say''All of a sudden I have a garden'' too.We got another man in to grind the tree stump and root-a couple of hundred dollars but worth it as it all disappeared and left me with barrowloads of woodchips/sawdust. Under The tree would have been roughly a ground area 10 metres x10 metres-unable to be mown or gardened. We cleared and raked it level and now I have so much motivation to be out there with my lovely new garden. So I am with you in thoughts-you will be so happy,as I am now.
