Frost and cracked water pipes

W3e have an infinity hot water heater system.
Does anyone know if it is ok to turn off the water at the mains tap overnight to prevent the water pipe from cracking in a heavy frost. The neighbours house flooded due to a heavy frost and subsequent cracked pipe recently.

Don't know the answer to your question, but I would probably lag the pipes. If you turn the water off you would presumably have to run all the water off too or the residual water in the pipes could still freeze. Incidently we have had -7 frosts down here and the pipes to our infinity were fine even though they weren't lagged.

Yes emptying out the water is not a problem. The issue is what damage can that do to the infinity gas water heater on the outside of the house.
7 frosts ok but the 107th heavy frost and bang there goes the water pipe in your ceiling and $10000 damage. Rototuna Hamilton.

We get a lot of big frosts down here, and as long as the pipes are well lagged ,you should have no problems. We don't.

Make sure you leave the power on to the infinity. As alot of them have frost protection fitted. But the frost protection needs power to work. And as others have said - insulate the pipes.

Turning the water off will not help - the system will still be pressurised - water expands when frozen and in a closed system will find the easiest way out, hence burst the pipes. One way is to put a 'bleed' at the end of the pipes, so that there is a small continuous flow through the pipes, but I don't know if this is an option for you.

Does opening a tap and running out water in the pipe not do anything?
