Large Evergreen Tree?

ruie, Apr 16, 10:59pm
At the rear of our property there is a 4 storey apartment block soon to be constructed. Prior to this development, it was an empty section with some very large trees & tall bamboo which gave us total privacy. Unfortunately this land has now been cleared & we are feeling rather exposed. Thankfully, we have a large Camphor tree on our rear boundary & some big pohutakawa branches which overhang from our neighbours property but we need to plant another fast-growing, large evergreen tree to obtain more privacy & block out the apartments.Any suggestions! Thanks.

If you plant some 1-2 m olive trees slightly closer to your house, they'll do the job immediately and well, and provide an evergreen dappled shade which won't become overbearing.

Aussie Frangipani will shoot away and get to 4-5 meters in a couple of years .Also give fantastic fragrance through early-mid summer and feed for any urban Tuis that might be around.

Fast growing trees - not saying I would ever plant them, Leyland cypress, sysigium/eugenia, leptospermum copper sheen(4-5M)

Fast growing - no, they're weeds and become a problem later when they're enormous.
Patience, you want fast grow a grapevine on trellis or something.

How is that going to give them privacy its deciduous for a start and they are trying to block a 4 story building, at least if you're going to be skoffy- (is that a real word!) about other ideas maybe suggest something usefull instead. ;-)

pittosporum (sp) are fast growing, lots of different typeleaves, colours, etc and can make quite a nice hedge.

native hoheria grows quick here (Nelson - don't know where you are).It has lovely white flowers in spring too.It is a bit prone to blowing down when it's about 15 years old, but you could plant something slower growing to take over in that case.
Also virgilia (purple flowers), also not long lived but quick growing.

Mind you, that bamboo will sprout back up pretty quick, too

Yes, as in #9, I'd saygo for hoheria, aka lacebark. Just don't plant too close to fence as the trunk could cause damage in a few yrs. Monarch butterflies love those little white flowers too.

PS One of those. or two pittos.

I'd be tempted to plant a fast growing tree like pittosporums or virgillia and then plant something slower growing. The first trees will act as nursery trees and then when the slower trees get to a decent size cut down the fast trees

In Auckland you cant beat a China Doll tree (Radamachera) - they will put on at least 2m of evergreen growth per year (sometimes more depending on your soil and situation). The best thing about them is that you can prune them hard back whenever necessary and they will quickly come away again. Kings Plant Barn usually have good sized plants and now would be a great time to plant. Attractive white flowers too, and tolerant of clay soils
