Hi ords, if youv'e got a tunnel house why not try starting from seed.

ords, May 17, 3:50am
Im thinking along those lines. I want to garden all year round, we are prone to frosts here tho and it gets really cold. Would they still have enough warmth to grow! The stuff in the tunnel house is growing well. should I be adding any fert or anything!

Seaweed/kelp is on!

have orded some Collard Morris Heading seeds today , Collard greens as most of us would have heard them called on USA TV programs, recommened by "Aruthurdent2" soas to have another green in the garden , a different green every night of the week and all out of the garden , go garden[ well thats after I pot them up after I plant the seed after I get the seed } But will let you know , every thing in the garden is growing well and we are eating well

Have planted the tunnel house out in brassica and did put some carrot seed tape in as well. Will see how it all pans out. We are getting some frosts here now so I may have wasted my time. Am tempted to start growing things from seed. seems to be the most cost effective way of gardening. Have started watching radar's patch on a Sunday night, very humouress.sadly he has left his quarter acre section for now.

Bhhrrrrrr it's cold up here. I've been so busy running around after the horses, I've done next to nout in the garden :( BOO!But, I have still been lovingly removing caterpillars!

Anyone! How can I get rid of them without picking them off every night - rather time consuming when I have 1 million animals calling for my attention for dinners! :) haha

Hope all is well.We have had lots of rain and everywhere is looking so nice and greeeeeen. :) :)

Hi guys, how are we all doing!
It's been so rainy up here, everything is green, but hard to find the motivation in the rain to go out to tend to the beds! haha
POTATOES are having issues. they were growing super well in the chaff feed bags I Have them in, but for some reason the leaves are browing off and they look all spindley and wilting away! HELP!Any ideas! We haven't really had a "frost" yet. so not sure what's going on there.

Not much else to report really - pretty boring all round!

:)

I have three chooks, they are barnevelders. Bridget, Holly and Kendra. They are not laying right now tho - too cold.
Hopefully they will start up again soon. their moult is finished now so hopefully eggs shortly.
Just don't put raw chook poo on the garden, let it sit and rot for a bit - same with sheep poop I think.

I have not planted any winter crops at all, I did get out in the weekend and weed everything so i can get some fert on the soil before i plant it out in the next month or so. Far too cold and wet here in Christchurch for poor wee seedling to grow anyway lol.

I've planted: garlic, early potatoes & some red onion seedlings. Also more broccoli, some cauliflower, lots of lettuce. My lettuce keeps getting eaten by possums though :-(

My newly planted fruit trees seem to be doing well though :)

long time no post lol.An update from my last post. The only thing that seems to have survived outside is the pakchoy and some small silverbeet plants. the herbs have all gone to seed but I have left them there to see if anything comes of them. In the tunnel houseThe potatoes and carrot tape didnt come to much at all. other carrots are growing well but just slowly as is all the brassica I planted in late may early june. Got some seeds today for lettuce, tomato, cauli, brocolli and red onion so have put them in punnets. Hoping to be able to re-plant the entire garden with plants all grown from seed. We are going to rotary hoe the outdoor part this weekend, make good use of the seaweed. Think we will need to add some good compost inside the tunnelhouse to give it a boost. Also got 4 more strawberry plants and some garlic today. We are getting some lovely sunny days here. but very hardy frosts.
My wee lemon tree is looking a little worse for wear. anybody know if down south is ok for lime and mandarin trees! Would love to have them too.

Hope everyone is keeping warm over the winter.

why do you want to put epsom salts on your garden! I hear lemons may like them! Coffee! around roses but fork in. Aplles from cuttings, sorry they need to be grafted from root stock. It is better to sow seed in a tiny troughin a row about 2-3cm deep Then gently cover over gently with a metal rake & pack down firmly with metal rake. The only vege I have had go to seed that I kept the seeds from was parsnip. I resowed it the next spring with top success. But it pays to always use fresh parsnip seed each year anyway. Tomatoes that have been left to rot in glasshouse will germiniate the following season. Good luck!

Epsom Salts are used as an occasional Tonic for African Violets, it helps them to green up, etc.

ords, Oct 4, 3:47am
Hi all, an update from my posts all those months ago, the carrots are still growing slowly in the tunnelhouse as is all the brassica I planted in May! Have eaten some brocolli tho, and everything else is starting to take off after we put in some superdirt a few weeks back. We got hit awfully hard with the 50yr storm here on the farm and the garden has been my sanctuary.
I decided to grow from seed this year where possible, so now have a heap of lettuce thriving in the tunnel house, spuds are up, tomato, cauli, broccoli are also starting to look good. Have planted spuds outdoors and some carrot tape. Still need capsicum, cucumber and zuichini plants but plenty of time yet. All my herbs have survived the winter as have our strawberries.
Hope everyone else is well.

3) Suit yourself - they'll generally do fine whatever shape you sow them in as long as the soil is reasonable(fertile, well drained and warm), you don't put them too far underground and you water regularly.
4) If vege plants flower then go to seed, they will disperse the seed one way or another so you'll have more crops. I've found the easiest way to learn apart from books is to let a couple of plants do their thing and watch what happens - always fascinating.

oh i can join a new thread, Hi i'm Jill and a vege garden beginner. I have so far planted Sugarsnap peas, radishes, corn and lettuce in my raised vege garden and a cherry tomato, pumpkin and strwberries in pots. All seem to be growing slowly, it is still very changable weather wise here in chch and we are still getting frosts so i have been covering my babies at night lol.

jills3, Nov 19, 3:08am
ok my problem, planted maori potatoes into old recycling bins, growing well and I kept covering up the new growth.Problem - was given another couple of bins planted Jersey Bennie as they were sproutingand afew more maori potatoes, mixed potting mix and heaps of general vegie powder mix.Waited and waited nothing sprouted so decided after 3 weeks to use this potting mix to cover the first lot of spuds I planted, I tipped it over my spuds and I have never seen so many maggots in the mix (grey and white) now its to late the mix is all over my first lot of growing spuds.Where did these maggots come from, and will they get into my spuds and ruin/eat them!

pentax1, Nov 19, 3:17am
Yuck Jill3 that would be awful, Not sure what you should do as i am new to this but there may be something you can put in the soil that kills them but not the potatoes. The birds ate my first lot of lettuces that i planted from seeds so i bought some seddlings and got some netting and so far so good lol.

jills3, Nov 19, 3:22am
I just wondered if I put to much vegie powder mix, as I wanted a good crop , I throw handfuls into the potting mix. Also bought potatoe fertiliser.Felt so down about it today, I havent even been out the look at the spuds.
