Welcome rodcindy.Watch when germinating seeds that you don't plant the seeds too deeply.rule of thumb is to push them into the soil only the depth of the seed.Alternatively, I prefer to sprinkle them and just brush the soil back over them a little.
At least if they start to germinate a little straggly, you can push some more soil over.If you sow them too deeply they simply wont come up.
For free seeds, wander around the neighbourhood and compliment neighbours with good looking gardens, strike up a convo and tell them that you're a bit of a seed whore and if they ever have any spare you'd be very willing to take them off their hands.
Sounds like you have talents of your own.let them know them too, they might want your talents more than their extra seeds!
*nods* well, really a garden whore.I take anything and everything that's free!

Maybe I am turning into a seed whore, I have heaps to plant out into little containers. :DI'm not sure, they are a fancy type of lettuce, curled, but not curly and purpley coloured around the edges. :)It's just a cool old wheel barrow that used to have flowers in it - it'll look really neat as we live in a cottage type place and it will really suit my garden :)

hi there just a few questions about growing garlic - how does garlic grow does it grow down or outwards, how much room do you need for garlic could i grow it in an old formula tin or do i need more space!

We planted some Liseta and some Islam Hardy. We still have more to plant out - but will do those in a couple of weeks when these guys have sprouted. :)

You could grow one or two, really not worth using a tin. You'd be better off buying one of those plastic bins from warehouse or mitre ten for $9 or cheaper, they're longer and you'd get a good ten or twelve in one of them.
They grow out into a clove and upwards like a spring onion on top.You don't plant them til the middle of winter (longest day) and harvest shortest day (midst summer) however if you don't get a great summer like this year, I left mine a good few weeks longer to get thicker and larger til I harvested.

Hey there, no we are still buying some veges (mainly carrots (for the horses and bunnies) also, onions for us), everything else we are trying to grow ourselves.I really should do some spinach and some more lettuces, as we try to eat a bit of that with our meals, spinach is too easy to grow and you can chuck it in ANYTHING! Have you planted much lately Desp!*no, I did not grow the pumpkin, I am intending on planting it in a pile of horse crap and seeing what happens* - we did this last year with great results! hahahaha :)

I bought a bag of seed garlic last year from the garden centre, it wasabout $8 and had at least 6 large ones in it, plenty to fill my garden.I separated them all and planted them, grew well but don't expect them to be as large as in the shops. However they also wont be filled with growth chemicals. And they're way stronger too.

Every time i have just typed a "n" I had to ctrl V paste it is - my n key is bung!I thik I will be quiet tonight, too hard to type! hahahahahah :)Have a good one all :)MM
