Hi everyone , This thread is a great idea.
Ok here's my question,
I have been offeredwalnut tree saplings which I would love but have never grown them before so am unsure of their needs. What sort of preperation do i need to do and what position (ie: shady, semi shady, full sun) is best for them to planted in!i'm in North Canterbury so possible snow/heavy frosts in winter!
your advice would be greatfully recieved
thanks in advance

Hi guys, I picked up two types of seed potatoes today from Kings, also got some silverbeet, broc, cauli and spring onions, radish and another lot of red cos.Am stoked with my haul :) tomorrow I will be transporting some tyres to get the spuds going. and then planning out where to put the rest of my spoils.Enjoying a vege stirfry tonight, with caps, spring onion, chillis, 2 types of courgette from my own garden - very happy lady here :D

missmuppett, Mar 21, 2:40am
Oh and some egg in it also, from my chooks! :)

You must all live in frost free areas, where I live I wouldn't be planting spuds until the frosts are clear, so I have to wait a long time.Good luck.

soc_butterfly, Mar 23, 2:57am
it's spud time now.for winter spuds that is.I want agrias this time!

soc_butterfly, Mar 23, 3:20am
hmmm, might need to ask piq or the other gurus, but I was looking at my gardening calendar from yates and it says spuds!

missmuppett, Mar 28, 2:04am
Ooooh that is good Desp, I do love that show. :)I harvested some more Scallopini courgettes tonight, as big as my fist! I am stoked! :)So easy to grow.I also did a bit of weeding and well watered everything - so hoping for some more yummy vege action this week :D

I have ripe blueberries! Crazy seasons.

jenner4, Mar 28, 5:05am
Planted out red onions, another row of carrots 3 of radish , I run a row of carrot/radish mixed together and on both sides about 2 in away a row of radish , keeps the baby carrot weed free till a bit bigger, more leeks, cabbage and cauli.
have a few large pots that I am growing my lettuce plants in and they are growing so fast , around the section in sheltered places and on the balcony , I think I will keep this up for winter , its just so simple to do

soc_butterfly, Mar 28, 4:02pm
I agree desp. Plus the added bonus of knowing exactly where it was grown and what wasn't sprayed on it!

soc_butterfly, Mar 28, 4:02pm
PS u should get ur seeds today

jenner4, Mar 28, 8:33pm
that's great jenner, do you have to bring the letuces in when frost starts or will they be alright as they are!

No , dont have too, frilly lettuce can cope with cold weather, if you put them in a sheltered spot in garden or on a balcony/ back porch, under the eaves of the house they are as good as gold , I'm going to make a mini shade house in a day or two by using a hanging planter and plastic and a hair dryer , will let you know how it goes but if you plant2/3 lettuce in a large pot and have it in the sun but right near the house and you are worried about a frost just cover with a old sun hat for the night , now how simple is that , but that sort of weather is months away L O L

jenner4, Mar 29, 1:09am
I am going to use the hair dryer to mould the plastic over the hanging basket , on the out side that is and use it upside down as a mini shade house in the middle of winter on any thing growing in pots, if it works I will let you know , will try a few pics

soc_butterfly, Mar 29, 7:18pm
I'd still be sowing winter carrots and lettuces and silverbeet, and beetroot two weekly through winter, and cabbages, cauli, broccoli etc.

missmuppett, Mar 30, 2:20am
Have decided to do my spuds this weekend in feed bags, rather than using tyres. hope all goes to plan - will keep you posted. :)DESP - I usually just do the scallopinis however I do courgette, like added in dishes, rice dishes, pasta etc, on pizza, or in stirfries.

Desp, do you get NZ Gardener mag!I ask this because they have a special page for those in deep south. It might be valuable for you this winter til you're used to what you can and cannot do down there.

How's the new place!

soc_butterfly, Apr 1, 3:05am
Ohai!Glad you get it, very informative pages in the mag.
