Shade Tree Advice please

kaeloch, Nov 15, 9:35am
Hi
I am a moron garden-wise and freely admit it!
I would like to plant a fast-growing shade tree in my dogrun - suggestoins please. It needs to not be poisonous to either dogs or cattle once it grows.

Second question I have a tree by the house which is just lovely. Not sure how old - its about 4m high and has yellow leaves - any ideas what it is!

TIA

Gosh there are a lot of trees for your dogs run that you could choose from.Flowering cherries are nice cos you can buy them grafted at say 1.8m with branching above that, and they grow quite quickly. Deciduous so won't shade in winter when the dogs probably want a bit of sun for warmth.

Your yellow leaf tree could be a Gleditsia or a Robinia Frisia or a Golden Elm (small fern like leaves, medium sized rounded leaves and large leaves - in order as listed).

Do you want a tree that looses leaves in winter or an evergreen!

Yahoo - thanks katelin1 - its definately a robinia looking at the photos :-)
Thanks for the suggestion.
@ redhead96 - don't know really it probably doesn't matter - deciduous would be fine.

If you don't mind the leaves there is that tree that has bright green leaves.
I don't know the name of them. They also don't flower so you don't have the worry of slimey blossoms everywhere.
They aren't really a fast grower thou.

I love gleditsia for shade too.The loose their leaves in winter so your doggy can enjoy the sun in winter.

Why not plant fruit tree ,apple pear or plum on a vigorous root stock and get the best of all worlds.Shade ,fruit and deciduous.

Thanks for all the suggestions - lots to think about and some ideas I would not have thought of! (Now to google some of them so I know what they look like!)

Just an update - I ended up buying a weeping elm and its been in a 3 weeks now and looking really good despite constant warm wind and zero rain!
I bought a "treegator" for it - its a bag you fill with water and it drips out over a 5-6 hour period. Its easy and awesome!

You've chosen well! They are seriously beautiful trees.I have one, about 12 years old now, and have to trim the branches occassionally. My cat loves sitting on top of it, hiding in the leaves!

Great - weeping elms are beautiful and not as widely planted as they should be as they are fabulous trees. : )
