Gabion retaining walls in a residential garden

Has anyone used these? Thoughts please. We have a massive garden that needs retaining walls/terraces. I hate timber retaining walls so looking for alternatives. TIA

Had to google that.

Oooohh. LOve it! Stone would be expensive though wouldn't it? But if you can, it's nice. Would last longer too.

That's what I was wondering. Price of stone may be the problem. Will research.

I would have said the amount of space (the basket's "footprint") that they take up would be the biggest problem. and even with the weight of them, they need secure anchoring, as they've been known to slip, slide away.

afaik the big cost is labor. the stone sin't to bad but every stone is placed in the right place by hand. its a bit of an art.

I'm talking about an area that is 20 metres wide and about 10 metres down to a flat lawn. The same on the other side of the flat laSo the size of the baskets is not a problem. They come in all different sizes anyway, depending on purpose.

Baskets of stones, not a stone wall.

i thought they where often done like a stone wall so they don't move and settle over time.
maybe i have it mixed up.

Why not have a timber retaining wall that is covered by stone? That way it would be cheaper and you wouldn't see the timber.

How would that work? Not heard of that before. Went out looking at retaining walls yesterday with the guy doing it for us. Have come around to the idea of timber after seeing his work elsewhere. DH has agreed it could be stained or painted (using a commercial spray gun), so not feeling quite so bad about it now.Access difficulties, so it really is the easiest option.
