Buying a new fridge and electric jug

venna2, Sep 28, 12:40am
I wonder if anyone has a recommendation for the best brand?

I've owned my smallish fridge for some years and suspect it may be nearly on its last legs. Which brand is best?

And I bought a new electric jug, Zip brand, metal (not plastic) in a sale at Briscoes some months ago (but didn't keep the receipt as it seemed like a simple purchase). Lately, the switch/lever/whatever it's called won't stay down, at least until I've tried several times and am losing my temper. Then it might stay down a minute or two but pop up again long before the water is boiling.

So perhaps I need to pay more for a better jug, though I've never had this problem before. Again, any recommendations?

Thanks!

1st recommendation would be to keep your receipts. Second recommendation would be to go back to Briscoes and see if there is any help available to you for a replacement jug. Zip brand is exclusive to Briscoes and there may be a manufacturing date code on it that would make it impossible to be out of warranty.

If you bought the jug via eftpos perhaps your bank statement showing purchase at Briscoes will be enough?

My old fridge with its built in iceberg finally got replaced by a Samsung fridge freezer, from Noel Leeming in one of their big sales. It had to have decent freezer space, and fit the existing place in my early sixties designed kitchen, which wasn't an easy find seeing dimensions have changed over the last sixty odd years. So I shopped around, online and in person, because I wanted one that would also fit my limited budget AND see me out. I am very happy with this one, and with their delivery and removal option. Saved me a lot of hassles.

To my surprise when I purchased a new drier from Noel Leemings the nice lad took my old dead one away. It was still hanging on the wall lol. I was told that I was not to get them to do anything extra. The lads said, they can take the old one, but not hang the new one, at that stage. He also said the person I was talking too didn't know much.

Sorry I too have a Samsung as does my daughter (her's is a later model than mine). Both inherited.

Thanks folks. I'll start by checking my bank statements as I can't remember how I paid for the electric jug.

If I do buy a new one, not from Briscoes, any preferred brands?

Kmart do good kettles, had a glass one for about 5 years. Actually most electrical stuff from there still going strong.

Kenwood jug. Last one lasted around 20yrs. Then bought an exact replacement 4 yrs ago for $1.50 on trademe.

Try and stay away from trade depot fridges.

Its pointless having receipts-the writing fades on them within a few months

I bought a De Longhi jug based on Consumer reports (and price). Not cheap, but not ridiculously expensive either. Very happy with it.
I am fond of Mitsubishi for fridges. very reliable. so say many online user reviews. Not I bought it a day ago and happy, the I bought it 15 yrs ago to 3 yrs ago ones.

Take a photo with your phone and save it on a file.

I have a Mitsubishi upright freezer, it's excellent. When I replace my crappy old F and P fridge I'd go for a Mitsubishi, great brand.
As for jugs, I had a Mikasa(?) brand from HN cost $20 and lasted ages. Now have a stainless (cant stand plastic ones) from the WH, cheap as chips and hasn't missed a beat so far.

I got a glass jug from the warehouse. that seems to be doing a fine ol job.

Our fridge is Samsung. double doored fridge and freezer. I find the veges in the vege bin end up frozen. and one of the doors of the fridge, the recess where you open it, the plastic is a different colour to the recesses on the other doors. Annoying. But we've had it for about 5 years and it does its job,

Stay away from Panasonic fridge/freezer. Too noisey.

We bought a second handd, but new condition Russell Hobbs stainless steel kettle from the 90s, when still made in NZ off of trademe. Plugs in, so marginally less convenient, but works really well. Have been using for a few years now.

We were using a a stainless philips one before that, made in UK, but the socket where it gets electricity from the base started not connecting after many years, and it is hard to find a replacement part.

I had one of those stainless ones, it was wonderful until it started making puddles on the bench. Old age is hard on some of us. So these days I have a glass Russell Hobbs with personality. Occasionally it gets cross with me and stops coming on when placed on the base unit. Frustration ensues, much fiddling about with connections and checking. Then out of the blue it forgives whatever imagined transgressions I have made and works again. One of these intermittent refusal of services inspired me to buy a new kettle, cheap, online. Pretty blue light and all. Installed the new boy alongside the old, made tea, and was disgusted by the taste (yes, I had rinsed it carefully several times before using!). Reinstated old kettle which grinned smugly to itself and worked like a charm. New kettle sits on the shelf above, as a psychological reminder to the bastard beast.

I'm calling it a draw.

Most electric jug mechanisms fail after a while. So, never open the lid unless you really have to. Just fill through the spout. And turn it off yourself, mostly.
I have had a $30 Zip jug from Briscoes that has worked for years. I like it so much that I bought two more and gave one away for a present and one for a spare.

oh_hunnihunni, Sep 25, 12:57am
I suspect it is the lid mechanism. So far though I have resisted the temptation to whack it on the head with a hammer.

Gotta love an appliance with personality!
