We need to spray our large Pohutukawa tree and so need a bulk amount of a spray (mainly to kill the mites). The Mitre 10s, gardening places don't have it and neither does TM. Where to try on line?

HAVE A LOOK AT FARM SUPPLY STORES

I'm sorry, I can't recall if miticides come under the growsafe regulations or not. Have you been told a particular chemical to apply? My suggestion is to at least enquire with a commercial spraying contractor as often it can work out a lot more expensive for an individual to purchase a smallish amount of chemical and then have the problem of actually doing the spraying (have you got all the gear required?) Contractors usually buy in bulk and often it is cheaper, quicker and a lot less hassle for them to do the whole job for you. At least, that has been my experience generally. Depending upon what is suggested to use and whether or not it is a controlled substance, you may well have to use a contractor anyway.

Are you sure it's mites? Seems unlikely to me

Pohutukawa suffer from beetle damage, holes in the leaves. As above, if it were mites I would be surprised. As Piquant states probably better and easier to use a contractor, but if beetle damage the tree will get over it,

Thanks for your thoughts. The knowledgeable person at the garden centre (or center) said they were mites and there are certainly holes in the leaves. I think you're right - the tree will get over it but it's annoying for our neighbours and we want to at least look like we're doing the right thing ;-)

Mites are a sap sucking insect and definitely won't be responsible for holes in leaves. Miticides are relatively toxic concoctions so best avoided unless you're sure of the actual infestation.

+1 toxic to people, pets, other insects etc. any wind drift over the neighbours can result you getting into some very hot water.
