Hello :) I am looking to block a grass approx. 2m wide space between house and fence to keep our very curious toddler from going out onto the lane. We are renting so has to be temporary and will be doing so on the cheap i.e. chicken wire and stakes type thing is what we're thinking at the mo. But we have to be able to undo it from time to time to get the lawnmower through. Any ideas?

Can you ask the LL to put up a gate? Actually I would ask the LL for ideas. As a LL I would far rather be asked for ideas than be confronted with an obviously temporary or gerry built 'fence' that took away from the look of the house.
Or what about the likes of Warehouse or Mitre10 and one of their brush type screens. You could fix it in place by using long thin stakes, drive them in and carefully tie or nail the screen in place.

I agree re landlords helping with essential things. If you are a good tenant they may see the value of it not just for you but others. The bamboo screening attached to stakes is good and easy to remove. I have used Bunnungs panels. I varnished them on the grass before erecting them when dry as lengthens their life but not necessary. You,d like only need one. You could measure lawnmower width and care fully roll back bamboo fence there. Bamboo is less painful than brush fencing. If your landlord helps you might get a proper gate. Keeps his/her property safer.

Like previous messager mentioned, Warehouse have 3m rolls of Manuka like "brush" that is about 1.8m high @ $59 yesterday. Go to Farmlands depot & pick up 3 x steel"Warratahs and you have a fence. When at Warehouse grab packet of 150mm/200mm plastic cable ties to secure the brush to the Warratahs. For about $100 problem solved. Cheers

Do you have a local freecycle?, or ask on neighbourly for a second hand gate?

Waratahs are expensive and heavy. Why not use fibreglass rods- won't break, very strong and easy to whack in. Seller on here is good. I think my last lot were about 40$ for 10.

Assuming that the kid has at least as much intelligence as a one day old calf, put up an electric tape. Nice and quick and can then be removed without a big mess to clean up.

Are you kidding ? 🤣 😂 You’ve got to be. 🤔 Please tell me you are kidding 😳 🤢 ⚡️

Kidding about what? It won't harm a toddler and as I say, if he/she has some intelligence then he/she will only touch it once.
If you are suggesting that the idea is wrong then do you also think electric fences should be banned from animal control?

I think you’ll find there is a law against electrifying fences for people control in New Zealand.

I think that an electric fence is legal as long as it has a warning sign. Little jenny will learn to read really quickly!

I know you'll find that there is no law from putting an EF around your place to keep wild animals away from your children. Has this current government managed to dumb people down so much that lateral thinking is no longer?

Just a thought, but I rescued several thin alumium struts when my tv aerial was replaced, and use them in the garden. They are lightweight and very strong, perfect for pinning things up or down. The installer was happy to get rid and said he often has them if I need more.
As for electric fencing, there is a law I believe regarding 'man traps', I have always understood that deliberately creating hazardous situations was a legal problem in this country.

How can erecting an EF to prevent dogs and other uncontrolled harmful creatures from entering your property and harming your children be considered as per your claim?
