DH is fixing an antique style hand water pump at the local kindy, but the leather on the piston is worn out and he is wondering he he can get a replacement? Any ideas welcome.

There are places that fix water pumps ie those used for farm & rural domestic use. Deep well pumps like ours still have 'leathers' so perhaps try & find a place that services farm pumps etc & see if they can help.

Be very careful not to put the piston in a vise as it is cast iron and it will break. And it is difficult to make another one.

Any good saddler should be able to supply what you require. Depending on the size of the piston seal, an old leather belt should be useful. A lot of modern modern' leather' products are composite pressings and not suitable.

Are you talking about leather cup washers as we called them in the trade? Most water pump agents would stock them. Davies Pumps, MacEwens pumps etc.
