It looks like part of the aerator, which screws into the tap spout. You may have to change the whole thing - unscrew yours, and take it to Bunnings or Mitre 10, and buy a replacement.

Any tips on the unscrewing part? Remember doing it before on another tap and it wasn't easy!

They usually have flats, so a spanner can fit. Just the job for your trusty Crescent!

Why does a tap need an aerator? It won't filter out the asbestos coming from the crappy main water pipes.

Who knows? They all come with them. Filtering imaginary asbesos isn't what they're designed for.

Or leave it off - not necessary. Don't notice any difference in water after 3 years without one.

The street next to mine had its asbestos pipes replaced a few years ago.
Yesterday the council voted to spend $3 million replacing nine kilometres of cement pipes in Temuka's main line with new plastic ones, after asbestos was found in its water supply last month.
Asbestos cement pipes, which have about a 50-year life span, were commonly installed in New Zealand in the 1950s to 1970s. Damon Odey
The district's mayor, Damon Odey, said the pipes in Temuka were thought to have another 20 years of life left - but they had failed and it was important to find out why.

Why whinge about that on a thread about aerators? They have nothing to do with asbestos.

Did you not see the item on TV the other night? They showed a filter that looked like that aerator and it had asbestos all over it.
Thanks for all the help. New aerator is working nicely!
