How hard is it to change a kitchen tap?

christin, Nov 5, 4:17pm
I currently have a mixer on their that is only a few years old but has started leaking from the hose bit (on the pull out spray) and looks like it needs to be replaced. the button on the top has also perished.

it is the type with two metal pipes on.

Is it a mission to change this myself? want to find out before I undo and find it was something I couldn't do. Anything I should know?

Dotn mind giving it a go to save the $. Have to buy the tap, and adding on a call out fee, labour and mileage will bring it up a bit for probably a small job so if I can do it, would be good.

Thanks :-)

It can be an easy job, but! you need to determine first ,can you get to the pipes and undo the fasteners, and also how is the tap secured to the bench, do you know how it comes away. Plus you need to be able to turn off hot and cold water supply. Good luck.

thanks. turning off the water supply is no problem. Done at my kerb. have turned off many times when ive had leaks in pipes coming into the house.

i can access pipes etc. can easily get under the cupboard. I just wasnt sure about the tightening of the nuts etc. is that easy to do, ie is it easy enough to tighten with a normal spanner or do i need more?

im going to be replacing like with like, or close enough to. ie not a really old one with a new one etc.

fingers crossed! will have a look this weekend if i dont have friends kid staying! :-)

It would be a good idea to use thread tape when you do the job to help insure against future leaking. It is wound onto external threaded part in the direction that the nut is tightened.

Be careful - some mixers require a (special) long box wrench to tighten the clamping screws. I had to find a friendly plumber to borrow one to do mine.

Most mixer taps come with a tube spanner for the job, just awkward to get to.Use plumbers hemp instead of thread tape as the heap expands when it gets wet giving a better seal.Well done for giving it a go & saving yourself some cash . Good luck

Really important to make sure you get the special spanner supplied with the tap. This is to attach the tap, not the hoses. You can't do the job without this.
