My son bought me a beautiful orchid plant about 18 months ago. The flowers eventually died off and the leaves got a bit scruffy looking so I put it outside. I have just noticed a very healthy couple of shoots. I would love it to flower again in summer. What should I do now? Feed it? Put it in the sun?

I would keep it inside because if it a Moth Orchid they require warm temperatures. Yes, feed it with liquid plant food for orchids, weekly, I think, I am no expert on orchids though. Someone else will be. We have had one at work for years, never been repotted nor fed and it flowers every year.Try a google search.

I'm no Orchid expert, either but I was given one around 5 -6 years ago & really didn't know what they need. It has seldom been without flowers, I've chucked a bit of nitrophoska type fertiliser at it maybe one a year (if that) & watered it when I remember, & the wee thing has rewarded me with so many flowers, it's unreal. I've had 66 buds & flowers on it at one stage. It's in a conservatory & I re-potted it so that it's feet weren't ever in water & I figure that it must be going to give up one day, after so long & hard flowering. I have come to the conclusion that I have it in the right spot, all day sun like a mini glass house, but get damned cold at night in the winter. The friend that gave it to me also gave one to another friend & hers has long karked & hers was in a non sunny place. No rhyme or reason as to why my semi neglected plant has thrived. I don't even like them that much, but I now really like this little 'stayer. Sorry, I wish I could be of more help.

im no expert either, id bring it inside. Feed it some fertiliser, and dont let it sit in water, drain well after watering they hate cold wet feet. I have 2 inside, one is still flowering it started at xmas, this week ive just shifted them off a bay window to a table, dont want them to get frosted in the deep south cold, they are loving the warmth of the heat pump. Google the kind, you will find info.

If its the indoor moth orchid plant, once flowers have died off do not cut the stem as this is where new shoots will grow for your next flowers. Only cut stem to just below where it might be dying off. The plant will also grow new stems for flowers but ths takes longer. Water more less often rather than a little water more often but never let it sit in water. Fertilise yearly.

A Cymbidium (flax like leaves) it will be happy outside. The flower buds are set around December I believe so nothing you do now will alter that. I'd leave it where you have it, probably no need to water it at the moment so a liquid fert not really helpful just now. If it's a moth orchid (smallish plant with fleshy rounded leaves) it sounds like it's doing ok where it is. They are very fussy about position & don't like direct light, nor do they stand cold. Somehow I doubt it is one of these, unless you have a mild climate/ perfect spot for it outside. In which case leave it there!
