Laying Vinyl Planking - Tips

I had vinyl planking professionally laid last year, the first time around was a complete disaster and it all had to be replaced. As my house is very sunny all the planks lifted and curled up at the edges. Second time around the packets of planks were left in my house for several days to ‘acclimatise’ before being laid and the curtains/blinds left shut to keep the sun off for 3 days until the glue had properly set just to be safe. Was a perfect job and I love the look and how practical it is with 4 dogs.

And they are shit.
If you have wood, great, if you don't use tiles or lino or carpet.

I'm no professional but what I've done in the past is to nail a straight piece of mdf skirting down the middle of the floor as a straight edge. Glue your first run down and gently tap the planks against the straight edge then continue to lay in lines making sure the edges are well butted together. When you've reached the wall take up straight edge and start working the other way. The acclimating thing is important and make sure the boxes lie completely flat while this is happening. If you're patient you'll end up with a great result and they are very hard wearing. If your existing floor isn't completely flat then put down some thin line or it will make the job just about impossible to do well. Good luck

Make sure you clean any surface glue, if any, as you go

If you are getting thin line DONT use 3mm . use 4.75mm MDF. Better still is hardboard 4.80mm. but is twice the price. They are not shit as someone said. laid properly and they will look grand.

How are you guys attaching the thinline/MDF/hardboard to the floor?

I watched someone laying some in a large area and asked why he wasn’t using the offcut for the next row. Was something to do with preventing an obvious zig zag pattern. He had a random system of cuts. Looked good when he finished.
