We would like to move the toilet by about four feet. Can anyone give us a clue as to how much it would cost?

jmma, Jan 25, 1:29am
P or S trap, concrete or wooden floor, vented through side?
Lots of info needed.
Anything can be down if you throw enough money at it :o)

Wooden floor,P trap.We have been told twelve thousand, which was a surprise

kecal, Jan 25, 3:31am
12000 your kidding someones trying to make quick buk or 12000

Can you do any of the prep yourself to save costs. I know you cannot move, disconnect, reconnect your self but you could get it all ready for a transfer. $12,000 sounds ludicrous. This comes from someone entirely uniformed on these matters.

Moving the toilet, $5.

Making it work and look good again. $11,995.

Without seeing how much work is involved, we can only guess. So get a 2nd quote (from someone that can actually see the job) and go from there.

Thanks for replies, hubby and I were a bit stunned.

Neighbours just had a new toilet put in and then had the old pipes sealed off

I think you should get more quotes. Even $1000 seems excessive

Most of that will be the consent and inspections and always get 3 quotes

pauldw, Jan 25, 2:26pm
A simple move probably would be covered by the Schedule 1 exemptions from a Building Consent. Another quote and the full story maybe.

annmary79, Jan 25, 7:20pm
Thanks everyone,we will get somemore quotes.

bcohen, Jan 25, 7:27pm
Wow, that's a lot of money to move a toilet, in a raised timber floor.

opunakeite, Jan 26, 8:02am
Wouldnt it be more cost effective to clear the blockage than move it four feet and put a new one in?

hammer23, Jan 26, 8:16am
The biggest part of the job is all the digging and exposing of the drain,if you do that then you will save a lot. The rest of it may be fairly straight forward but one thing that will need to be checked out is the terminal vent, that is the one running up the wall and through the roof. All of this is covered by the plumbing and drainage regulations. What you need is a plumber/drainlayer to check it out and advise you but my gut feeling having not seen it is that you are up for quite a lot of $$$,it will not be a simple job and will require to be signed off by council. Council will proberly want amended drainage plans drawn and so on it goes and goes.

Get another quote, but did you ask the company that gave the quote why it is so expensive?

Have seen jobs where the P trap toilet goes through the wall in cast iron. The otherside of the wall is underground, and getting to the pipes means cutting open the driveway and digging down 2m or so.

Without seeing the job, everyone is just guessing. There was a case on here where someone was asking whether $800 was a fair price to have their kitchen sink mixer replaced. Lots of people said that that price was way too expensive. Then it emerged that the sink mixer was the version that is concealed in the wall (3 hole mixer) And the sink bench had to be removed and reinstalled to replace the mixer.

If it's a P trap then it's going thru a wall so moving it is quite an issue. Depending on how much work is required to access the drains, extend them under the floor convert to a S trap pan, and a new/extra venting system and so on it might be that $12,000, huge as it sounds, could be correct.

Did the quote include fixing up the wall etc where the old pipes come out?
Are you sure it wasn't $1,200 and not $12,000 ?
