Growing Garlic

Question please, Will Supermarket garlic from the USA grow in the garden if planted ? Do they do anything to stop it growing ?>>>

The garlic bulbs from China all have their bottoms cut out, so that it can't be planted, so the US garlic may be the same. NZ garlic clearly still has roots on it, the stuff from China has a concave bottom core.

I looked at the supermarket garlic and queried about it with a friend who works there. She said she had tried to grow it but she thinks it is sprayed with something because she couldn't get it to grow and she can grow most things.

Perhaps try sitting the cloves in shallow water - if they root they will grow.
I start mine off this way.

I think the root part is cleanly removed to meet MPI import requirements. imagine how many viruses could be transported if roots were left on?

I've grown supermarket garlic from China without a problem. The didn't all sprout, but most did. Some even sprout in my pantry, while some just go rotten.

Most of my chinese garlic is about 3 or 4 inches high and doing well. I planted it as cloves about 3 weeks ago and most have taken off. If it will sprout green out the tops, as it usually does sitting in the kitchen, it should grow in some soil. How well it will keep growing or crop remains to be seen, but growing isn't an issue so far.

The Chinese stuff is not a patch on our NZ garlic. I would not bother with imported stuff. Those plastic jars of crushed garlic are made from the insipid Chinese stuff.

Probably for the best, I understood a lot of Chinese garlic was grown in human excrement due to the low price the govt sets for garlic.
