Growing garlic, help please?

Hello! I was wondering if I could please get some help on growing garlic. Firstly, do you have to let your cloves sprout before you plant them in the ground! I heard you plant them in the Winter time, is this the start, middle or end of Winter! Is it possible to plant it at any other time of the year! Where is the best place to get good garlic 'seed'! I would appreciate any help I can get. Thank you so much!

Hi, I was always told to plant my garlic on the shortest day of the year, and harvest on the longest day. I have never bought garlic to plant, I have just planted some I have had at home. Some of what I planted had small sprouts, some didn't. Mine did best in a sunny position. Last year we had a dry winter and because I was working full-time I kept forgetting to water and I didnt do any good. The year before, when the soil was getting enough water I had a bumper crop.

I aim to have mine in the ground by the end of June. I harvest in Jan. I never water or fertilize it,I get quite good crops every year, the size of the bulb you harvest will depend on the size of the clove you plant. I will use a large bulb from this years crop for next seasons seed. Good luck.

I also plant in June and harvest in January, though I have read that you can grow garlic at any time. I don't worry about the size of the cloves I plant - it does not seem to affect the size of the resulting bulb. I grow about 100 bulbs each year and seldom have any failures.

^^ wot ebygum said ^^^though mine do get sheep pellets at planting, and a nice blanket of pea straw which keeps the moisture level constant.
