Garlic is traditionally planted on the shortesxt day and harvest on the longest

Yes so would it be worth my purchase then if I purchased what would be classed as "last seasons" dont want to purchase a ready! eg it will not grow well, it will not show results etc.

Of course I would have to store it still until the shortest day to plant.

I planted mine in autumn last year - it was supermarket garlic, some of which sprouted, so I planted it. It wintered well, grew nicely then this spring as it warmed up it started to dry off, so I lifted it. I now have two dozen small but perfectly formed (and very intensely flavoured) bulbs hanging at my kitchen window. Definitely worth it, but don't invest too much at the start! 'Free' is best when you are taking a punt.

Plant on shortest day, harvest on longest day - is a gude, not a rule.
It is a good guide - can't really fail, but still only a guide.
You can plant at other times, and still get usable garlic. In some parts of the country you can harvest year round if you plant year round.
You need to have an idea of what will work for you, where you are.
