I need to buy an old model pull start for an old masport with old B & S motor. It is side mounted with only 2 bolts for mounting with toothed nylon engage wheel? The spring return has lost it's return.

If you have a reuse / repurpose shop associated with your local recycling / transfer station, then they may have an old mower you can purchase one off. The only problem is they tend to have been already picked over for the most common bits that fail. etc pull starts, fuel tank caps, carbies throttle cables & lever !

Is the spring available as a genuine spare part or is it too old for that?

It will simply be the "hook" of the spring snapped off. I normally just heat the tip & re-bend it back in to a hook again

If it is the old vertical pull recoil start unit you can still buy a replacement spring or just grind a notch in the old spring if it snapped off the end .Part number is B&S 390066 or a Cama 55-2704 they take about 5 minutes to replace the recoil spring .
