How to solve a cat problem - $5!

Finally have stopped a persistent cat coming onto our section and stalking the birds and digging up the garden. There were 2 entry points he had by jumping over a lower portion of our fence.
Just under $5 solved the problem.
A couple of lengths of carpet tack strips!
Over 2 weeks and no cat.

.22 shell would have been cheaper. LOl

Somebody told me foil wrap - spread a length along the edge of the garden. Cats don't like the feel of it under their claws, or the sound it makes. I put some out a week ago and so far I'm cat-free. Have to use a lot of stones to anchor it down, though, especially as it's been very windy here and the foil tends to tear easiy.

Poor cats, that seems a bit over the top/cruel. but I do know what a problem they can be, I have always owned two cats or more, never complain about cats digging in my garden, which all neighbours cats do as I keep my soil cultivated, They love it, but I just deal with it. Unless I have very small plants or seedlings in the damage they do is not too bad.

cleggyboy, Nov 3, 5:30am
The old story by law you HAVE to fence your animals IN, not others having to fence animals OUT.

docsportello, Nov 3, 6:40pm
I'm yet to perfect my spring-loaded trapdoor. Thye jump over the fence, trigger the trap, and whheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee goodbye!

dennyr, Nov 3, 7:42pm
I have no time for anyone cruel to animals in any way shape or form. Surely a cat cant be that much of a nuisance poking round a garden. I havent owned a cat for many years but often see my neighbours cat sunning itself in my garden and it doesnt worry me at all.

veejay13, Nov 3, 7:52pm
I think docsportello is "winding you up" a bit :). I understand his feelings, though, and, dennyr, if your neighbour's cat was digging up the seedlings you were nurturing in your garden, then you might just worry a little bit.

Have the hose at the ready and have the tap turned on as far as the the tap will turn . then BLAST them! You will never see them again! Sorry, but I don't like the sound of carpet tacks! You don't want to injure the cats. surely not!

maclad, Nov 4, 1:53am
Agree, those tacks would surely rip cats feet badly and it is not the fault of the cats that they visit and dig. Some people just have a fixation re not liking cats so poor cats suffer sadly. Guess that sort of control would be found to be sadly lacking by those in command.

Have advised the SPCA. Expect a visit.

I think everybody is going a bit over the top re the OP's method. He is not using loose carpet tacks but carpet tack strips. Cats aren't dumb, they are going to put one paw out and feel the tack and figure out that it's best not to go there, no harm done, end of story

venna2, Nov 4, 9:16pm
That's not true at all, at least when it comes to cats. Cats are recognised as knowing no boundaries.I feel really sorry for those cats that are restricted, especially those kept inside all the time. I am often visited by a neighbour's cat and I enjoy her visits. Plus she keeps other cats away!

stuffed, Nov 4, 10:50pm
Shouldn’t they send tacks collectors instead?

survivalkiwi, Nov 5, 4:24am
I am a cat lover and I don't have a problem with ops method.
I do have a problem with human animals who think it is funny to kill a loved family member. We have had our cat since master 16 was a few months old. I dread the day the cat does not come home.
Also spare a though for all the little old people who's cats are their main companion.
People who kill domestic cats just because they can should be jailed.

I've found that citronella oil works as a repellent. I put it in a wide-necked bottle lying on its side to keep rain out. I've heard that citrus peel and vinegar work too.

If all a cat did was sun itself in my garden I wouldn't have a problem. Thing is, they don't just sun themselves - they SHIT in my vege patch. The same vege patch where I use my hands in the dirt to mound up spuds, firm down around new seedlings etc. Mmmmm. nothing like running your hand through your dirt and coming up with stinking cat SHIT.

So I keep a stock of old fruit on my patio table and when I see a cat creeping in looking for soft dirt to SHIT in, I throw stuff at it. I don't often hit them, but it does keep them away for a few weeks until they feel the need to reclaim my property as their toilet.

Yes, I understand that as another poster has mentioned, a cat owner really can't control what their cat does and where it goes 24/7. Yes, I understand that cats have been around and kept by humans for thousands of ears, and are as much a fact of life as is oxygen. All good. But my vege patch IS MY VEGE PATCH and I reserve the right to chuck things at cats, and to shovel up cat SHIT and toss it over the fence to the lady that owns the three cats that call my place a toilet - and a place to hunt birds.

i agree. Disgusting to have cat sh1t innth4 garden when you don’t own a cat. We have the same problem. I have been considering getting something like spikes to stop it. We spend thousands fencing our dog in. Cat owners neeed to keep their cats on their property or don’t bother having them. We have cameras so we can see them coming and going in the night. We also caught the neighbours dog sh1tting on our front lawn inside our section as hubby had gone out for 10 mins so we left gate open, comes back big sh1t on the lawn. Our dog was inside. Looked on camera sure enough, sneaky dog. Showed the owner, no apology, so next time it happens they can expect sh1t on their driveway. Disgusting

if you are worried about the day your cat doesn’t come home, why don’t you keep it on your property then it will always be home, not rocket science.

starseeker, Nov 7, 6:28am
how does one keep a cat at home?

shanreagh, Nov 7, 6:54am
How cruel. No Christmas card for you!

You keep it inside and clean it's poo up yourself.

shanreagh, Nov 7, 6:56am
Yes this is a method that works.

shanreagh, Nov 7, 7:02am
Heavens above all these cat haters! What happens when there is no cat to hate.

After years of gardening and cat owning this is what I do
1 put little twigs around new seedlings unitl they are established
2 I always use the fork to give the bed I am working on a good hoeing/digging and then things such as dried out cat poo and sticks and stones come to the surface and I remove them before going any further. I always wear gloves as well.
If there are nasty cats I use a large water pistol to scare them away. Got the water pistol at a toy shop. biggest I could get and it has a pump action! Ha ha

Actually this is not true it's the other way around.
