you should have been a detective, . but no, instead we believe you to be defective . you seem to be on constant patrol you troll ( yip that's what people are calling you 'a troll ' ), incessantly moving through the TM board, looking to antagonize others with what appears to be your one and only goal

Why comment on a subject you know nothing about . tell you what I bet you could sum up every thing you know about plumbing in less than 10 seconds . lol loos

Yes but she was included in the job as she was included in the billing

gazzat22, May 8, 11:36am
Well the questions I would ask are. Why was it a 2 person job? Could you see the registration or whatever for the second person. I would ring the Plumbers Assn or whatever they call themselves and query it or a reputable plumbers opinion I live in Franklin so would like his name so i can keep away from him.

Basically the plumber is charging out the services of his business at $110 per hour. the question is how he has itemizied the account. i would think if the wife did not come along for the ride, the invoice would have just shown labour 1.5 hours @ $110 per hour.

wfl1, May 8, 7:37pm
Do plumbers have a minimum charge on time spent on job ,say 1hr. Its his wife that's basically there for the ride that got me going.

wfl1, May 8, 7:39pm
Good point . Haven't rang yet but I will put that to him

jkp58, May 8, 8:00pm
look at all the road workers standing around getting charged out for the job. People expect to be paid for turning up for work not for what they did at work

j96, May 8, 8:19pm
I dont agree with the plumbers wife charge BUT i know with our guys we have a minimum charge for the labour side. If we didnt its not worth our guys doing little jobs. By the time they drive to site, unpack and do the the job, then pack up and go to the next one, they could have made more $ by going to a site where they spend the whole day there. So often it works out the same price to get 10 meters of gutter replaced as it would to get 20 meters done. But our guys are paid by the meter, not by the hour. There is no travel charge

That would be a very expensive plumber.

Reminds me of a major company who called me in to their Wellington factory. Only it wasn't in Wellington, it might have been Upper Hutt, or about half an hour's travel time away.

I had to leave home at 5:30am and didn't get back until about 8pm and my terms of trade were always laid out quite clearly that ALL time was chargeable, including travel. The bill was always itemised by hours and airfares, mileage etc.

They argued the toss about the bill and were late paying it.

They called me in again and then said they'd only pay me for my time in Wellington.

The third time, they said they'd only pay for the time I was actually in their factory.

A year later they called me in again and I told them that my terms of trade had changed and I was now charging a daily rate for out of town calls.

Needless to say that daily rate equated to a 14 hour day - and they just paid up without a murmur.

If you call in a plumber, you expect 'a plumber', but most of us would expect just one, and the onus should be on the plumber to make it clear that either his hourly rate is $110 - split between 2 people, or his hourly rate is $75.

I've spent a lot of time on shop floors setting production times and in a highly efficient fabric cutting room for example, it was usually 25% quicker using two people - but it was also 25% more expensive. There is always what is called an interference factor, whereby one of the two is often idle.

I suspect that in this instance, the hanger on wouldn't be doing very much for most of the time and unless the plumber could prove that his buddy was in fact under training, I wouldn't be paying.

We have 7 houses and an excellent reputation for paying for work before the invoices are due.The plumber we had been loyal to over the years turned up with two other men to plumb in the dishwasher. Not a difficult job for one, let alone three. We were billed for the Master craftsman, a craftsman and an apprentice. I challenged the bill and said ok, I will pay it but will take our business elsewhere. I did and never regretted it.

Incidentally, you could ask IRD if the wifes earnings are declared. Bet they are not.

d.snell, May 9, 11:19am
utter bullshit. IRD are going to tell you to dribble off and MYOB.

goose16, May 9, 1:18pm
So, cutting to the chase, OP is questioning $50 of an invoice from a plumber on a rural call out.
Good luck getting that plumber, or likely any other local, out to your place again.

artemis, May 14, 3:51pm
Not necessarily. Info sent through their anonymous website might or might not get looked at. But there is extra compliance effort going on to tradies and cash jobs. This combined with smart systems means IRD can check very quickly to see if a further looksee is warranted.

Those systems include the expected income / expenses range of various types of businesses to detect outliers.

Some people show they have not much ideas about how I assume =are sole traders in partnership , she does the books and he does the work.?

My wife used to travel with me when bored or for a gossip. I don't think she charged extra to the client for the gossip but some 'yes' ?.

tiny15, May 14, 10:23pm
Call the plumber & tell him you have another job. but just send the wife out by herself

arabelle, Nov 10, 9:57am
My pennies worth, When I get the plumbers out to do my chimney sweep, whether its one or two, I get charged the same. The boss sometimes comes by himself over the years, if the 'gang' are busy. It can be two experienced plumbers so one on the roof with the 'broom' and one checking the wood box, means they are gone in about 10 min. So No I would not be paying for a wife to walk to the van. He should have had an idea what the problem was and have the tools with him. and unless you had him parked 100M away from the house, her job was not significant. dont pay. and start looking for a new plumber
