I have planted 30 garlic cloves in the egg carton method, now they are in the garden. Wow, they seem to grown 1/2 inch every day. How tall do they grow? Can't wait till they are ready.

I usually wait until the tops start to yellow, pull them up, wash roots of soil and lay in the sun to dry.

They like plenty of feeding & water for big cloves . I have a competition with myself each year, to try & get BIG garlic . I plant about 80 each year & am just about to run out of last season's crop. love the stuff. It's very good for you, as well as tasting great!

What do you feed your garlic?

From experience I have found that loose soil at the beginning gives bigger cloves.

Sheep poo, & blood & bone with a tiny bit of chook poo . but I'm still working on getting big cloves. I'd also use cow, horse or pig manure if I had a source. Planting big cloves initially is also recommended.

Thanks. Sounds like I'm on track in that department then. I use sheep sh!t and blood & bone for most things. For the last few seasons I've been losing half my crop to what I think is white rot. This year I've tried dipping my seed cloves into very hot (not boiling) water for a few seconds. I'm going to great pains not to replant in the same places as previous years. Becomes a bit of a challenge on a residential section though.

I know! It's a challenge whether it's a residential section or not. I use a lot of garlic & to grow consistently large bulbs is my aim . haven't achieved it yet . maybe this year?
