I need assistance please. We are thinking of purchasing an old house, which has a lot of black marks on the floor in the kitchen area (assuming these are old water marks). I know they probably can't be sanded out and some boards may ultimately need replacing, but would like to know what other people do with these black stains and the cause. Any help much appreciated.

Are the stains from rust from the nails ?

We had a leak from under the sink which we didn't discover until we did renovations a short time later. It was under the linoleum which made it invisible until lifted. We put a mat over it!

I had that in a toilet in old house we had. We varnished the floor anyway, it didn't look bad at all then, just had that aged look.

Thanks for your responses. I'm guessing that there was a water leak or something similar at one time. The floors have been varnished over and there doesn't appear to be a problem now - just trying to figure out whether I can live with the black stains as they don't appear to be from nails as some of the stains are the size of my hand (small).

We've got a few of the black marks on the rimu boards in our toilet and bathroom so there must have been leaks at some point in the nearly 60 years since the house was built. We sanded and varnished anyway and looks fine. in fact kind of gives it that aged look like someone else above mentioned.
