in the garden that the outdoor unit of our heatpump blows onto.We live in North Canterbury and the garden faces west.I am not a great gardener and so would appreciate some suggestions as to what to plant please.

Gazanias! Google them.They seem to grow in the heat, and on dry beach sections and in and around rockeries. They are quite colourful, and not really difficult to grow.
