Hello. I need advice please. I am still relatively new to bulbs and this is the first year that I have lifted bulbs from the ground. I have lifted Lily and Gladioli bulbs. Some of the Gladioli are rather wet and gooey, and some have red goo. What is this. and do I need to dry them out? Thank you.
I'd throw them. It might pay to google if you need to "dust" them with something to stop them getting mould whilst stored. I lost a whole lot of bluebells and snowdrops due to that

Vebe I live in Southland and I just leave lily and gladioli in ground. When they become too congested then I lift them and replant them asap. I'm not sure if that would apply to where you live.

you will have to dispose of all the soft and squishy ones, put them in the rubbish not the compost so the rot doesn't spread to them all.

Thank you for you advice.

Often the 'old' corm is still attached to the new one. I separate the old one & discard it, & usually the new one which has formed on top of it is OK, nice & firm.

Same here. If any bulbs/corms are 'mushy' biff them & if they are firm make sure they are dry before you store them. Personally I don't bother, but I do have around an acre of garden. My philosophy is 'you win some, you lose some'. The only bulbs I would lift for winter, would be some rare treasure.

You mentioned that you had lifted lily bulbs also. They should not be allowed to dry out as they will not survive. We leave everything in the ground all year.We are in central Christchurch.
